None of them are sand coloured any more but could it have been a VC10? T-tail but engines mounted rear fuselage.

Are there still any hemp coloured VC10s, Mr B? I thought they were all in John Major Grey these days?

no, not a vc10 as the wings definitely had 2 engines in each wing root. i would recognise a vc10 as i flew back from ascension islands in one after spending 11 1/2 hrs in a hercules flying falklands to ascension.

Beagle,

As I said in my post:

"None of them are sand coloured any more ....."

bolmas,

Sounds very much like a Nimrod. Definitely not a Victor, none airworthy anymore. I operated the Victor K2 up until its retirement in late 93.
