In case this has not been posted previously here is an insight into what we in Britain got up to since WWII through to the Cold War.

Probably the most amazing place is/was RAF Portreath with a link from the official MoD site. RAF Wyton, RAF Bentwaters, RAF Alconbury are amongst others with photos, maps, descriptions etc.
