I guess this will cost a few gold bits that the company apparently doesn't have. May be a naïve question, but doesn't insurance cover this sort of hiccup?

Was it a scape or a decent nudge. When VA's 777 backed into a hanger it cost million and aircraft was AOG for 4 or 5 days from memory. |

The 747-400 'winglet' is a remove and replace part (I believe it's actually on the MEL that you can dispatch with one missing). Trailing edge damage on the 747 may be a bit tougher to patch.
