hmmm wonder how long this alliance caper will last myself, not much room for three carriers on some of those routes and with vb starting on bne-rok as well now they are going to start hurting. saw the same with impulse, some markets just aint big enough for 3!!!

Why in gods name would Alliance want to start BNE-SYD?

Wouldn't they be better off operating on routes where they are subjected to less competition - surely this is a death wish....

they are getting a bit of mining charter work but i couldn't agree more with you dh driver, dj and qf have the bn-syd market pretty well sewn up, i can't see anything but poor load factors and a lot of money lost if they try to take on the big two on such a main route, it happened to impulse and i bet it happens again, we might see some ridiculous fares again i suppose.

Of the two QLD destinations to be served from SYD, I'd say MC is one of them, but the other could be anything! Won't be ROK or MKY because of DJ, maybe HTI, or CNS to cycle the aircraft through to do the CNS-DRW???

We all thought the new colours were something to do with SQ.

If you frequent airports, take a very close look at which colors are the same as Alliance.............. and not on aircraft!

Fact: When Impulse were operating the BNE-SYD route there were 4 airlines (QF, AN, VQ and DJ). So the route could not support 4 airlines not 3. After QF purchased VQ the route had no problems supporting 3 airlines (QF, AN and DJ).

The problem was when there were 4 airlines each airline was operating at least 8 return flights (QF & AN about 12) a day on the route which was far to many. Although most VQ flights carried 50-60 passengers which is more than enough to make money in a Fokker 100. If Alliance did start on the BNE- SYD route my guess is they would do no more than 3 returns a day and be more of a niche airline on the route. Along the smae lines as their BNE-TVL ROUTEThey could offer the bussiness flyer a choice over QF plus allowing the family & friends traveller another choice.

The BNE - SYD route is ranked No 2 on the Australian Domestic routes with 3,734,524 passengers carried on the route in 2001 (when we had 4 airlines on it), with a load factor of 76.7%.

We now have DJ starting on the BNE-ROK route, this route is ranked No. 19 on the Australian Domestic routes with only 236,763 passengers carried in 2001.The load factor on this route was 65.4%. So this route carries 15 times less passengers than the BNE- SYD route has a lower load factor yet DJ want to be the third jet operator on this route. How can they justify operating on the route?

Maybe Alliance should do a DJ and have a chat to the ACCC and ask why DJ are operating the route and under-cutting the competition's airfares. DJ did the same when QF added another BNE-ADL flight and at the same time lowered their airfare below DJ's.

If DJ think BNE-ROK can support 3 jet operators why can't BNE-SYD support 3?

Possible other QLD routes from SYD are OOL, MCY, TVL, CNS or HTI.

ROK is now way to overserviced. In 2001, Bne-Rok had about 14 million ASKs, which acheived a load factor of between 65 and 70% per month. Now, with the Alliance and DJ capacity, we are talking 23 million ASKs, nearly double, not to mention the QantasLink B717s non-stop to Sydney as well that were introduced this year!!!
