YSCB CAT II?

Does Canberra need CAT II ILS? Discuss.

Terrey 24th Jul 2015 07:53

Nope, needs a Cat IIIB

Fogged in from around 7pm last night til what? 11am this morning. How much did it cost the economy, airlines? How often does it happen per year? Who's going to pay for it? There's your answer ;)

Capn Bloggs 24th Jul 2015 11:51

It won't come from AsA. They'll be flat out funding Dick Smith's Class E approach service at YBullamakanka. :}

Just aim for the flashing blue and red lights.

The Banjo 24th Jul 2015 12:50

Some fairly serious missed app gradients to deal with. The lowest minima is 2110' / 241' AGL / 5.0 percent gradient to 3200'. If you went to a 100'RA minima or lower the gradient would be rather steep.

Iron Bar 24th Jul 2015 15:50

I reckon Banjo missed approach logic explains it. Doubt there could be a CATII/III approach with a different all eng / eng out missed approach procedure?

heffy_inc 24th Jul 2015 16:35

The airport corporation (CAG) announced recently at Airport Safety meeting they are pushing to have the ILS upgraded.

Whilst I doubt this event will be enough to get the upgrade across the line, hopefully it adds more weight to the issue.

alphacentauri 24th Jul 2015 23:50

The ILS is already CAT II capable. There are some extra infrastructure items to be sorted like lighting, rvr, and tower monitoring....not insurmountable.

Max missed approach gradient allowed is 5%. If the obstacle / airspace environment remains as it is then lower minima for CAT II is not possible. Funnily enough it's the restricted area that is the issue...

c100driver 25th Jul 2015 01:16

At an Airways NZ meeting we were told that for the last 10 years the only ILS equipment available comes as Cat2 minimum as the base standard.

alphacentauri 25th Jul 2015 02:13

c100driver, that is correct

This little nugget seems to be worded poorly. Over the last week, I've heard countless crew asking for clarification.

C225/15 REVIEW C224/15
ILS/DME 'ICB' 109.5 RWY 35 NOT AVBL
INTERMITTENT ON TEST, DO NOT USE, FALSE INDICATIONS POSSIBLE
FROM 07 230540 TO 07 281000

It's the DME channel of the co-located ILS that not in service. The LOC an GS is available with the CB DME. Perhaps ASA and/or Canberra Airport should reword it?

STOL Artist 26th Jul 2015 11:13

Yes, terrible wording. All they have to do is say ILS-Z APPROACH RWY 35 NOT AVAILABLE and everyone would get the picture. You can still fly the ILS, just with the ILS-Y using CB DME.
