First Embraer E190 for Cobham Aviation

Looks like Cobham has his first E190 and a new livery. Came across this

Replacement for the 146/RJ100 in the short term, and positioning themselves for the renewal of the QLink717 fleet in a few years.

Embraer must be happy as it will now put the E2 as the firming leader for this order, given that Cseries is further delayed.

However given QF's fleet planing history..... some Einstein will probably select the SJ100 or ARJ21 are just fabulous for the refleeting.....:}

WagnerPrincipal 1st Sep 2014 21:37

I agree with one of the above posts, great marketing and use of photoshop. Nice looking aircraft though, but could it replace 717's or compliment the fleet on long thin routes?

EchoNovemberTango 1st Sep 2014 22:52

Paint scheme looks a little familiar to me.....

With the rego in the picture, it appears to be former Augsberg Airways - D-AEMG.

First Embraer E190 for Cobham Aviation

What does the Cobham fleet consist of now?
16 x 146/Rj's
18 x B717's
12 x DHC8's
1 x E190 probably reasonable to suspect more to come at some stage
Anything else?

Capt Claret 4th Sep 2014 09:11

Anything else?
A swag of DH8 with Surveillance and in PNG, not to mention the assets in the UK & elsewhere, including choppers.

Spinnerhead 4th Sep 2014 11:10

Wow - Choppers!!!!

Icarus2001 4th Sep 2014 14:30

16 x 146/Rj's
18 x B717's
12 x DHC8's
Qantas may have something to say about the B717s being part of the Cobham fleet.

Amazing what can be done with Photoshop software!
You may want to put some sauce on that humble pie.

Pie eaten. Guess I am too cynical.

Blueskymine 5th Sep 2014 07:11

But the 146 crew won't be able to tell everyone they are four engine jet pilots now? :)

0tto 5th Sep 2014 08:35

But the 146 crew won't be able to tell everyone they are four engine jet pilots now?
They'll be the only four engine jet pilots in Australia in the coming years...

Snakecharma 5th Sep 2014 09:45

It is a terrific little jet, the Cobham guys/gals will enjoy flying it.

Much better than the Scruggs wonder jet!

MyNameIsIs 5th Sep 2014 11:24

146 a Jet?

ha! Its all fan. And no reverse.

Give me some Jt8 goodness with clamshells any day over a quadrapuff!

But to keep it on topic, what are the plans for the Embryo? I have heard Barrow Island, but why?

Agent86 5th Sep 2014 14:28

Perth to Barrow charter
Australian Aviation

airdualbleedfault 6th Sep 2014 00:14

So just the one? Then I guess only a select few will be endorsed and everyone else can admire from the cockpit of the gas chamber.
Nice article in Australian Aviation although I'm pretty sure Cobham/National Jet have been flying to Barrow for well over a decade

How come you doods keep posting links to articles that need a subscription to access?

TWT 6th Sep 2014 02:58

It's a conspiracy to stop you from reading them,of course !

Jack Ranga 6th Sep 2014 03:13

mmmmm, ok, might think about that for a bit. Don't want to get a complex

Jack Ranga 6th Sep 2014 03:14

Or a simplex, don't want that either :ok:

:confused::confused::confused:I don't have a subscription however I do have access, so there must be some form of conspiracy???

I've always been told that these mining contracts are so lean that you could never make money on them with the likes of an Eject. Hence the prevalence of cheap old F-100s 146s.

So how does Cobham do it yet others can't? Sounds like they're a pretty organised outfit they're running there.

4dogs 7th Sep 2014 06:08

you get what you pay for

I've always been told that these mining contracts are so lean that you could never make money on them with the likes of an Eject.
If the cost of providing certain infrastructure, particularly where there are severe environmental constraints, outweighs the cost of running a particular type of aircraft, the contract will be written accordingly. The margin will still be skinny in the buyer's market that is FIFO.

If an E-jet was the preferred aircraft (which is rumoured to be the case), then Cobham would have to absorb the cost of adding the type to the AOC plus the inherent costs attributable to diseconomies of scale, a distinct competitive disadvantage compared with Virgin and Airnorth. Certainly, Airnorth would seem likely to benefit from the fleet addition and the attendant business expansion while having nowhere near the overheads of Cobham, so the floor must have been strewn with pencil shavings... :E

Stay Alive,

neville_nobody 7th Sep 2014 11:18

So how does Cobham do it yet others can't?
Or they're making zero money on it but at least they fend off Virgin and now have a presence in the market with a new flash jet.

Mining contract work is a bit of a chess game. The miners will play everybody off each other differently to get what they want.

AerocatS2A 7th Sep 2014 12:16

Unlike National Jet, Cobham have never been in the business of tendering for contracts that don't earn a return for their shareholders. If they started now it would be a major change in philosophy for them.

scrubba 8th Sep 2014 01:45

big call

AerocatS2A, that's a big call! But then, I guess cost plus $1 would meet that criterion :E

Icarus2001 8th Sep 2014 14:47

So many comments based on so little real knowledge or information.

Do some research...Cobham plc ? Reports and Presentations Archive

Most fleets start as one aircraft. I believe they will have more by the end of 2015.

Capn Bloggs 8th Sep 2014 15:00

You should apply, Iccy. Join the boys on the BIG ones. :E

Prince Niccolo M 8th Sep 2014 16:07

Icarus,

I'll play! What does the linked presentation tell me about the contract on which the E190 is to be employed?

Agent86 8th Sep 2014 20:21

Your highness.
If you look deeper into the cobham site you will find this

http://www.cobham.com/about-cobham/m...-aircraft.aspx

The first aircraft is always the hardest to get. Everything after that is incrementally easier, but also dependent on contracts.

Capn Bloggs 8th Sep 2014 23:25

The BIG question is...does it have Cost index?? :}
