Jetstar - What Gives ??

Folks,
I note that Qantas ( the real one) and Virgin have cancelled flights to Bali, due the major volcanic event --- but the last Jetstar press release/statement I saw on SMH news says that they have not cancelled any flights.
Maybe Jetstar does not subscribe to the Qantas volcanic ash policy/warning system.
Tootle pip!!

aeropelican 14th Feb 2014 04:41

Plenty of operational spares around when things go bang!

hotnhigh 14th Feb 2014 04:56

They should because don't they take advice from the meetings convened in the qf war room?, all subscription fees paid of course, just like cobham and qlink.:ugh:

blueloo 14th Feb 2014 05:47

I didn't think QANTAS flew to Bali... hasn't for a long time. (Like most places)

underfire 14th Feb 2014 06:06

Seems reasonable...

*Lancer* 14th Feb 2014 08:19

Qantas doesn't fly to Bali and Jetstar doesn't fly to Jakarta.

Ash nowhere near Bali according to Darwin VAAC...

Jetstar flies into Volcanic Ash Cloud

Bugger!

Volcano eruption cancels Bali, Phuket flights and closes Indonesian airports

Thankfully it all turned out ok. Passenger reckoned it smelled slightly sweet; sounds more pleasant than the smell that may well have been coming from the cockpit...

Ned Gerblansky 14th Feb 2014 10:23

Expect?

Well what do you expect when on of their sims has EXACTLY the same scenario, and our crew was apparently the first to say "I'm not going into actual volcanic ash."? Sheer bloody madness to launch with that in the way. 200 hour wannabes in ops might have had something to do with it. Stay alive, remember the 3 'B's, Beefsteak, Beer, Babes. If where you're heading ain't got them 3 - then don't go.

UTW 14th Feb 2014 10:35

I'll have what Ned's having.....

Gunung Kelud in east Java erupted last night at 22:50 local time causing volcanic ash to many areas of East Java. Photos below are from Jogjakarta and Surabaya airports which were closed today.

All VA flights that were airborne were instructed to return to DEP Port.

Greenlights 14th Feb 2014 13:21

This mistake is unforgivable and show pilots behaviours. How come pilots nowadays in 2014 can still fly in volcanic ash clouds ??

LeadSled 14th Feb 2014 13:31

I didn't think QANTAS flew to Bali.
Folks,
It turns out the QF flights were to/from Djakarta.
And pots of re-routing.
Tootle pip!!

hei yu 14th Feb 2014 19:54

On ... on ...

From this morning's ABC news

Indonesia's Mt Kelud volcano erupts: Tens of thousands flee, airports closed - Australia Network News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

"One woman says she and her partner were on their way to Singapore to go on a cruise.

"We were so excited, being Valentine's Day... everything was great, having a few drinks on the plane, and then all of a sudden Adam's looked out of the window and said 'we're doing a 360'," she said." :ugh:

clark y 14th Feb 2014 21:00

Some of you guys ASSUME that the pilots even knew of the existence of the ash cloud. Were warnings in place at preflight, was the company providing a flight following service, was ATC providing warnings?

compressor stall 14th Feb 2014 21:41

I'm not an apologist for Jetstar, but when was the warning issued?

If the volcano erupted overnight and the aircraft (apparently) hit the cloud at 5am local, was the VAAC warning issued? And 30 mins out from WIII is a bit hard to turn back to Oz from...

John Citizen 14th Feb 2014 22:04

I don't know how else to put it but some tossers out there really are so full of sh1t :ugh:

nitpicker330 14th Feb 2014 22:08

1/ Surabaya closed since yesterday ( we have a 777 stuck there presumably covered in ash and a crew in the hotel staying away from the Bar!!)
2/ Bali operating as normal ( with delays and some rescheduling ) with most Airlines except DJ
3/ Jakarta operating as normal ( with delays and rescheduling ) with most Airlines except QF.
4/ Flights being re-routed North of Bali Surabaya to/from Aus

Bali does seem an overkill at face value although the point at which DJ turned their flights around we don't know the info they had at the time.

Watching Flight Radar 24 over the last 24 hours has shown what's flying where.

clark y 14th Feb 2014 22:11

Latest sigmet 142247UTC states cloud observed from surface to FL650 and is approx 950NM by 850NM.

compressor stall 14th Feb 2014 22:15

VAAC Archives

Just looked back through the VAAC archives.

5am (apparent arrival time of the JQ flight) WIII is 2200UTC.

The warning at 1752 said ash to FL 450 within 50nm W. Not extending over WIII within the forecast period.

The warning at 2048 said ash to FL450, extending west to be over WIII at around 0400. (Possibly impacting on J curve aussie ports to WIII at 0300).

The warning at 2136 said ash to FL450 240nm W. Extending over WIII at 0315.

LeadSled 14th Feb 2014 22:22

Folks,
In the good old days, QF had a warning system (pre-dated the BA encounter with Mt Galunggung) that not only included all the state sources, but paid a small retainer to locals (usually Ausaid school teachers) to ring ops. in Sydney as soon as there was local volcanic activity.
There were examples of aircraft in flight getting warnings within 30 minutes of a local eruption in Indonesia, and hours to days before any "official" notifications.
Does this still exist? Or has it been the victim of the vandals currently decimating the "real" Qantas.
Tootle pip!!

apacau 14th Feb 2014 22:50

Local media are reporting JQ flight PERCGK flew into an 'isolated' patch of ash yesterday?

Pappa Smurf 14th Feb 2014 22:54

Qantas only do Sydney-Jakarta.
Jestar does Perth-Jakarta and not very often.

Gear in transit 15th Feb 2014 10:15

Jqasia do PER- CGK. Jq aus used to, but ran into standard pax weight issues and apparently if the flights done by an Asian carrier they all weigh less

VA was 96 miles from DPS airport when my plan was generated and over 130 when I left.

Going forward, this type of capital and labour-intensive activity is not encompassed by any of the pillars that support our transformation strategy going forward, and in the interests of enhancing our world's best practice safety excellence, it has been discontinued going forward.

titan uranus 17th Feb 2014 06:53

Christ some of you lot are dickheads.
1.There are very comprehensive Volcanic Ash policies and Day of Ops protocols at JQ
2. Airline policies can differ due aircraft payload/range capabilities and other day of ops operational reasons for which the majority of us aren't privy
3. JQ is no less safe than Qantas in any respect, so just try for once to get past your pathetic attempts to discredit your professional colleagues and move on to more important things in life. Like having one.

WhyGen 17th Feb 2014 07:04

But aren't QF pilots safer than JQ pilots?

BlackPrince77 17th Feb 2014 11:56

But aren't QF pilots safer than JQ pilots?
Of course, aren't they the 'best pilots in the world'?...

The Banjo 17th Feb 2014 18:26

Seems like hysterical reason number 586 as to why Qantas is the only entity in the universe capable of flying airyplains, is disproven.....

Bring on #587- we do enjoy a giggle :ugh:

Village Idiot1 18th Feb 2014 01:16

Jetstar - What Gives ??

But aren't QF pilots safer than JQ pilots?

I reckon they generally are, and that's not tongue in cheek.

Toruk Macto 18th Feb 2014 03:41

If they are not flying much then statistically they have to be safer .

Tankengine 18th Feb 2014 06:42

I say again; many Qantas pilots are doing max hours and the others would do so if the f#%*^}{ up management would "grow" the business,:ugh:
I am home for the last few days only because I am out of hours!:ugh::ugh::ugh:
I have been really safe rebuilding my deck!:E

Toruk Macto 18th Feb 2014 06:51

Your sounding safe . Maybe don't read pprune before you use those power tools on your deck .
