At a recent love in, the new COO was asked directly why QF needed to have a specific return on capital before investment on new airframes, yet JQ Intl didn't turn a dollar and had the newest aircraft in the fleet. His answer was that he acknowledged the truth in that, but simply wasn't able to answer that question as he didn't know the reason.
Because it was always a "Baffle them with Bullsh!t" justification for an outcome they had predetermined. Management had already decided to chase the Pan Asian strategy (lots of LCC aircraft = lots of leasing & third party opportunities for the those in the know). Even better when the businesses are run across multiple jurisdictions with complex accounting structures to designed to deliberately obfuscate. Then layer the language issues on top of that, & Asia is the looks like the golden goose for the chosen few.

"Until it returns its cost of capital" is meaningless gibberish that can never be tested in a court of law. Management simply needed a plausible cover story in order to justify the process.

... because Jetstar (Intl) is going to fly all the Qantas tail 787 900s that will come. Duh!
I don't think it is quite that simple, Daylight. That will put pressure on the T's & C's though.

Indeed great news if true, did a few laps on OJA, love the old girl, she's a special bird, a great piece of Aussie aviation history that should be preserved.

Even I would forgive Alan if he goes through with this.. Wow, did I just say that! :):ok:

It's a romantic thought but...

That's Mojave, for those that don't know.

The only way out of that place is in the form of a recycled Coke can!

Beer Baron 4th Dec 2014 10:18

Looks like the sale is off CoolB1 and it is going to a local museum after sorting through a few issues.

Collando 6th Dec 2014 09:54

OJA

Having worked on OJA over many years, I have to say it was in great condition compared to some of the other 400s in the fleet and always seemed to have less problems to rectify than some of the newer 400s, perhaps because most common problems had already been sorted.
It was and remains one of Queens of the sky !

IsDon 6th Dec 2014 13:24

OJA Definitely going to Albion Park

Heard it personally from Alan Joyce this evening at the 767 farewell function. :)

Not saying there may not be some possibility of an unseen hurdle cropping up to stop it happening but the intention is 100% to park it at HARS.

denabol 6th Dec 2014 19:17

As a non-pilot, is it possible to safely land a presumably almost empty 747 at Albion Park, and once in, is there any way to fly it out?

It seemed hairy enough to me making a few trips in the Qantas Dash 8 before that service was cancelled.

Shouldn't be a problem. Longreach is comparable, and higher, and hotter and they managed to land a classic there a few years back. The classic also had to have enough fuel on board for a diversion to Brisbane.

Once it's in there though. It's there to stay.

porch monkey 6th Dec 2014 20:56

Geez, Tima, I didn't think you'd be so easily bought....

Wunwing 6th Dec 2014 21:21

The problem with Albion Park is corrosion. IRA is not Longreach where the air is dry. At IRA, if you scrape a hole in the ground it fills with saltwater and the runway is only a short distance from Lake Illawarra which opens to the sea.

So if OGA is seen as a significant heritage item, its not the place to go to preserve it. If its to be just a tourist draw card then its the way to go.

Wunwing.

They should mount it on a humongous pole out the front of the CAMPUS to remind all the wankers that they work for an airline that has aeroplanes.

Fris B. Fairing 6th Dec 2014 23:30

Troo

The "wankers" don't get it and sadly they never will. Hopefully OJA is to be preserved because true believers with beating hearts want to see part of the company's heritage preserved, not because some psychopath thinks; "This'll make me look good".

spelling_nazi 7th Dec 2014 00:25

Went to the "campus" recently and up to information desk and asked what floor flight ops is on these days. Quizzical looks from the desk person .... "Not sure I've heard of them , what do they do ?"

Sigh .

Thanks Fris B. Fairing, well said, I admit to having one of those hearts! There is a lot of Aviation history in OJA and I'm a huge supporter in preserving the Qantas heritage, as an Aussie, I'm proud of it!

Spent a lot of time sitting on the QFI 744s SYD/LHR, gained a lot of respect for them and their crews over the years. It would be a shame to see OJA looking like this at Victorville. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Y...0000a-vivt.JPG

Albion Park would be a fitting home for OJA, great exposure for the Qantas brand and good for the Local business community, a wonderful "gift to Wollongong" from our National carrier. A win win for all of us.

Yes, the way he has masterminded sustainable differentiated competitive advantage by manipulating the international oil price is nothing short of... oh, wait...
