Australia Post is next in line!

In today's SMH:

Australia Post, which last week announced 900 job losses, is lobbying the government to remove rules requiring the company to offer a uniform rate for standard letter deliveries and to deliver mail five days a week to 98 per cent of the population. It is pushing for regulatory change by the end of the year on the grounds that plummeting letter revenues make the situation an urgent one.
Australia Post believes the reforms will allow its regulated mail business, which lost $218 million last year, to approach a break-even point over the long term.

The push will gather pace next week when the government tables the executive summary of a Boston Consulting Group report into Australia Post's financial state. It is understood the review will validate Australia Post's projections of rapidly accelerating letter losses and will back the introduction of three-day-a-week letter deliveries and two-tiered pricing.

I'm sure BCG can turn Australia Post into an "amaaaazing business" too! :}

BCG in Australia Post, goddam.... My annual tax would pay about 50% of 1 Mums paid maternity program that is about to be brought in, now it will pay 49% and 1% to BCG. Let alone roads services, health, FFS no wonder we are in debt.....delete BCG delete paid maternity leave and let MY tax actually work on something useful for the community. Rant over..

Anyway back to topic I would hardly say Singapore is Muslim, there would be more Atheists than Muslims, living there. QF need to get a service to Europe via Asia, Dubai is a dead duck.

They needed the Emirates partnership as much as they needed their Idle reverse policy on the 737. Hardly any pilots did it because they thought it was a dumb idea and now it has been revoked due to delamination on the brake pads events.......idiots...

And as for Fuel Conservation the biggest oxymoron is one word .....A380
Let's take 180 tonnes syd-lax with 400 pax while VA 777 will take around 90 tonnes with 320 pax. APU's shut down at the gate ain't gonna fix that problem.

Alan May or May not be happy but he is running the preverbial Animal Farm....
Not really running it just getting a heap of consultants to advise him how to run it.:ugh:

myshoutcaptain 17th Jun 2014 14:08

oh very interesting

Thread drift - AoA - how long did the idle reverse stay around for .. it's now policy at JQ with no data being published

Transition Layer 17th Jun 2014 15:35

myshoutcaptain,

Must have been policy only a few months or so. The big difference with JQ (and the A320) is carbon brakes. Currently being retrofitted to the 738s but they jumped the gun and applied the policy before every aircraft had been fitted

Works well on the 767. :ok:

I just saw an advertising banner for QF pop up on prunes website.

I did hear a rumour last week that QF have realised they've been screwed with the EK code share tie up.

Supposedly, the tie up requires customers booking thru the QF website to be directed towards EK metal flying to Europe.

QF have realised, booking punters on EK metal has stuffed their European Mainline services.

Supposedly, QF are now pushing passenger bookings thru local travel agents as there is no preference to book on EK for ticket sales thru agents.

Expect to see a possible increase in advertising to get bookings thru agents.

That is great news. Where in Europe does QF fly to? What happens to people trying to leave from anywhere other than SYD or MEL?
I call BS on that one.

The don

A legitimate question.

Have Alan and 'da team' ever managed to get anything right ??

Lookleft 18th Jun 2014 07:26

In JQ, idle reverse is not a policy it is a preference. That way when you run off the end of the runway at Ballina you can't use "I was following policy" as a defense.

Arnold E 18th Jun 2014 08:12

Arnold E - so you won't fly via Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore then?
Correct.........

Mstr Caution 18th Jun 2014 08:28

Hey Don, this is a rumour network.

What I hear is the 20th July network changes to London via Dubai required a sweetener.

Supposedly, QF needed to improve its network timing into London.

They approached their old mates at BA to swap slots.

The reception was icy.

QF are tied into online sales due the EK tie up. So the network changes were permitted when Armadeus was updated to sell the European network ex LHR on BA.

What was old, becomes new again regarding European network ex LHR.

I'm going QF business class to Darwin in a while to do some fishing. Interesting that there do not appear to be many direct flights ex Melbourne. I'm going via Adelaide - anything to avoid Sydeny (sic).

bdcer 18th Jun 2014 22:05

Not many flights from MEL-DRW....what about the QF838 daily service? Or do you mean there aren't many seats free.

Sunfish 18th Jun 2014 22:43

One direct flight per day. No seats even Two weeks in advance business class using points.

ALAEA Fed Sec 19th Jun 2014 00:14

This financial year will be the loss making one. AJ and co want it is big as possible so they can call for wage freezes and changes to the sale act. Next year however is planned to be a remarkable turnaround by the fantastic leadership team to make them look like heroes. I think the advertising campaign will kick on in earnest.

Lodown 19th Jun 2014 01:17

Sec: That'll be nice if it happens. I like having the occasional loss making year with my business, but then I only answer to myself on those decisions. It doesn't affect my employees, customers or suppliers. Can't imagine having shareholders and deliberately piling up losses into one year.

dch63 19th Jun 2014 01:58

You also need a network with the right aircraft and of course passengers to make a profit. Just look at Air NZ - not bad for an 'end of line carrier' operating within a nation of what? approx 5 million people.

Cannot wait to see the increase in pax fuel levy that AJ will impose due to his inefficient aircraft and the spike in oil prices due to current Iraq and the Middle East implosion - oh yes, QF now hubs through the Middle East....

Boe787 19th Jun 2014 03:03

DCH63,

Yes while Air NZ is going well now, lets not forget that not so long ago they were in as big or bigger hole than Qantas, required a Government bailout, and the Airline used the crisis to gain significant wage concessions from the staff!!

That said under Fyfe, they made some smart moves equipment and route wise from then on!

Were as Qantas have made some really dumb moves...............like completley pulling out of any International flights ex Perth!
Network is vital, and i would have thought the A330 could have been replaced with a QF738, to at least maintain a Qantas presence internationally ex Perth?

dch63 19th Jun 2014 04:19

would also be interesting to see if there was any correlation between NZ regulatory reform and the current success of Air NZ - i.e. was the industry unburdened/set free of regulatory red tape...just a thought
