What happens if he gets his bailout (whatever form that takes), busts the unions with government help and in a few years the airline if still in the poo?

This is a slippery slope, just look at all the other companies the government has bailed out. Money goes in, money disappears, money solves nothing, company goes tits up anyway.

Relaxing/removing the QSA will not solve the problem either. Who would buy it? China? The ME?

No bailout unless AJ takes the fall and walks-minus golden handshake.

If I am correct don't Qantas get nearly all of the Public Service Travel ?
If so then that is quite a nice sort of " subsidy " in my opinion.

The way I read the signals is they will get some sort of help from the Gov't.

IMHO, the 3 car companies pulling out will help Qantas get help as the TA Gov't won't want another bad news story with 3 already on the books and to be played out over the net 3 years. Toyota's timing of the announcement played into the hands of Qantas.

I have met him and can vouch that he's all that and more. A very, very experienced man, who has seen a lot of corporate nonsense both inside and outside the aviation sector.

Sometimes people get slagged for holding an opinion with which others do not agree. In my view, it's far better to hold a contrarian opinion, than to lack the intellect to make one capable of forming any kind of opinion at all.

They did have a vastly superior product to the competition for many years though. Now, maybe not so true with VA under JB.

Qantas has sought a government-backed debt guarantee as it battles Virgin Blue for market share, and in an exclusive interview with Fairfax Media, Mr Hockey said in his view, the airline’s request for assistance met four essential pre-conditions.
While his instinct was for government to not support individual businesses, Mr Hockey said the struggling airline had a “ball and chain” around its leg in the form of the Qantas Sale Act.

That law restricts foreign ownership of Qantas to 49 per cent.
Mr Hockey said the Australian airline now faced a “2000 pound gorilla” in the form of Virgin, which is largely foreign-owned.

“Number one is existing restrictions on the business imposed by the parliament. Number two is if it’s an essential national service, and number three is if it is in an environment where other sovereigns are engaging in direct competition to the massive disadvantage of an Australian business, then you need to take that into account,’’ he said.

“And the fourth thing is the business has to do its own heavy lifting on its own reform. We are not going to run the business or tell them how to reform.”

737 untouched...infact they will probably do more training and reduce the divisors to reduce the redundancies. I am well aware of the triggers within the award for training...but remember its planned flying, not actual.To be honest (as a 737 FO) I'm happy if it means my mates keep their jobs. However, I am aware of one of the +65's who is not happy and thinks its outrageous that his pay has been diluted due to the lack of a min daily credit. He was happy to point out "i hope they know I took a massive pay cut to come here"

Theres also the other +65 who is coming because "I can't deprive the company of my experience". I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, vomit or knock him out.

Anyway...I digress...

As Keg has previously pointed out, we have been told over and over that at the moment (excluding LWOP) that the numbers are close to right (maybe +60) but they are in the wrong place. I guess we'll see when the announcement is made.

This capacity war is becoming ridiculous. As soon as capacity relaxes, things will sort themselves out. Looks like QF may have one hand slightly unshackled by the guvmint soon.


Easy to be the lowest cost airline when you don't pay for anything. QF could be the lowest cost airline if it farmed off all of its bills to Jetstar :ugh:

Hasn't for a long time. I travelled on the public dime from 2005- 2010 a half dozen times a year and was booked on DJ as often as I was booked QF. The only exception was that QF often had better connections for the time I wanted. That probably isn't the case so much these days given how many routes have been handed over to J*.

I don't read Joyce's recent comments re IR as a threat. As ngineer pointed out I think this is to remind the government that QF is not a Holden, SPC or Toyota and that QF have been doing some 'heavy lifting' of their own over the last few years.

It's all just chasing after the wind though. We'll see what end of February beings.

So it looks as though the Australian taxpayer is on the hook for 110 Airbus to be deployed in Asian ventures. Not one single Australian job protected (except the one that most needs to go).:ugh:

AJ must be strutting around the boardroom. One crisis after another he's plunged the share price, starved investors, thrown away 100's of millions on bad decision after bad decision, now he's held the government to ransom and he'll probably walk away next year heralded a corporate hero.

Applications close 31st March 2014.

The MOU (QF / Jetstar Australia) quite clearly states that there will be no redundancies in either entity whilst the other entity is recruiting. The MOU will provide for the exchange of career opportunities.

Mstr Caution, just out of interest, What happens if they simply stop hiring for say 6 months at Jetstar, slash and burn the staff levels at Qantas during this period and then start Hiring again? Would the MOU require them to give some kind of priority to take back staff they removed from Qantas or would they then be free to take whomever they like?

Also, what would be the situation if Jetstar continue to hire staff but on NZ contracts, would the MOU still cover Pilots being made redundant with Qantas in Australia?
