Ch7 reports Jetstar First!

Local Ch 7 FNQ News has just reported on the arrival in CNS today of Jetstar's 787, which according to the news is bigger better, flys higher faster further AND also reduces turbulence!

Can any 787 pilots provide a précis of the TRS (Turbulence Reduction System) please?

Boomerang 16th Oct 2013 08:51

I think it's been covered in one of the other JQ787 bashing threads already Clarrie. It's similar to a load alleviation function I think. PS don't take everything you see/hear/read in the media literally :-)

Cactusjack 16th Oct 2013 09:04

It is also 'self maintaining' and even flies itself, so no more pesky pilots and engineers required! Once AJ has worked out how to minimise fuel there won't be a need for a Brisbane or Townsville refueller either! And lastly the new age aircraft doesn't require CASA oversight, surveillance or inspections either so you don't even have to add it to an AOC! Brilliant! Amaaaaazing!

But seriously with all jokes aside I wish them well. At least someone in aviation still has a job for now. Stay safe boys.

SOPS 16th Oct 2013 09:10

There seems to be a misconception in the media as to just how big the 787 is. I saw one report claiming that the 787 was a 747 replacement for the BA fleet. A lot of media outlets seem to assume the thing is huge.

Dangly Bits 16th Oct 2013 09:21

I saw one at KLAX recently. Beautiful lines but not a big beastie!

0tto 16th Oct 2013 09:29

The media probably picked it up on Jetstar's promo.

787

Its smaller than a 767-300 and from the front ugly looks like a 1950's Comet...
with JQ 335 seating config its sardine time...even Boeing advised them max config would be 260 but AJ wants more Bogons on the Orange Lemon Eight Lemon...

Wally Mk2 16th Oct 2013 10:26

There's still more plane fodder for the inept media to postulate over as the A350 will be along in the near future & if they are calling the 7ate7 big wait 'till they see the new French pig they'll positively go ape sh1t over it !
Watched an AI 7ate7 depart ML the other day, gee those wings flex upon rotation like they do on my toy planes:-)
Whom ever said the 7ate7 is ugly re the Comet nose I couldn't agree more, dead ringer for the Comet.

It really is the Ford/Holden thingy here with each other trying to out do each other.

And like Ford/Holden also trying to impress the Bogans. :E

Don't the media get excited, trying to get the big scoop...

There are Cruise Flaps, that reduce drag by automatically & symmetrically moving flap, flaperons, spoilers & ailerons to vary the camber & hence cruise performance (according to Wt, airspeed & Alt).

A Gust Suppression system is also active which smooths out the pax ride/bumps/turbulence but the Autodrag function on approach, if high on the G/S, increases turb (wake) by extending ailerons & outboard spoilers while maintaining airspeed until slope capture...

Their airframes aren't that huge either, alongside a Tripla or 767 as previously mentioned, but never let the truth get in the way of a good story. The wings (esp TKOF) and their sweep back are the most striking aspects too.

from the front ugly looks like a 1950's Comet.
I rise in defence of the Comet (and therefore the Caravelle). It may have had many faults but ugliness wasn't one of them (IMHO).

And judging by the yout@be vid of the first on arriving in MEL, you don't flare it either...:E

RAD_ALT_ALIVE 17th Oct 2013 01:20

Sounds like the media aren't the only ones who are ignorant as to the where the B787 fits into the Boeing 'size' basket (Goddamslacker);

B763 v B788 = 54.9m v 56.7m (I assume you're referring to length as blind-freddy can tell there's no confusion as to width and wingspan...).

As for those wondering about the relative sizes of the JQ widebody fleet, the A332 is 58.8m in length. Airbus fuselage width is 5.64m and that of the B788 is 5.77m - yet they squeeze 10% more punters into the newbie! Ouch!

Capn Rex Havoc 17th Oct 2013 06:13

Airbus have had a load alleviation function for yonks. Boeing is playing catchup again. ;)

PPRuNeUser0198 17th Oct 2013 09:41

They fit more in simply because they have reduced Business Class from 38 in the A330 to 21. The galley's are also smaller than the aforementioned aircraft.

Quite straight-forward really...

SOPS 17th Oct 2013 10:12

335 in a 787? Wow, they are really packing them in!

Omega471 17th Oct 2013 10:57

Economy seating

I managed to go through the aircraft this afternoon on Cairns. Seating config is 3 x 3 x 3. I'm not big by any stretch, 5'10 and sitting "normally" my knees touch the seat in front. I also pax'd on a Dash 300 today. A lot more leg room on the Dash.

I couldn't imagine a ML/HNL with the kids being much fun at all!!

ruddman 17th Oct 2013 12:02

Oh great. :{

Can see the day when we'll all have to stand and hold a bar or a strap even long haul. :*

SOPS 17th Oct 2013 14:09

Well, I hope the great unwashed enjoy the ride.

ferris 17th Oct 2013 15:38

At least the higher, faster part is true.

335? They can't fly fast enough.
