Wasn't this type of thing done before? Create more management teams by duplication, increase (double) costs for these :mad: to exist yet when these duplicated :mad: come in they try to make a big name for themselves and cut costs like an Afghani farmer at the beginning of the opium harvest.

At least one good thing comes of it.

I have just read BB's message to staff announcing his departure and am simply lost for words. If he truly believes what he has written then the man is simply demented. It truly is scary that so many peoples' livelihood were under control of this 'person'.

I would be worried if I got "allocated" to QF International. Wonder if it will be a vessel for change or change in employment contracts for pilots and f/a's.

Duplication of management (I can hear the clink of champgne flutes) and another layer of patsies under AJ when things dont turn out well.:eek:

What we'll do next is paint the Qantas Domestic tails blue to mark the differentiation. Then we will emphasise the 'Australian Airline' aspect of it in the branding. Genius!

Joyce is pedalling like crazy, he has to because he told everyone he was going to fix the business. Well the full service carrier in Singapore has disappeared, Hongkong Jetstar has gone real quiet, so now we have a restructure (as pointed out more exspensive managers). The trouble is for all the pedalling we arnt even staying still we are going backwards. When will the lunatics on the board wake up? If ever?

A quick review of Vanessa's skin care company's website show's that Mrs Buchanan is a company partner.

"In 2009 after her friends and families demands became overwhelming, Vanessa started making larger quantities of creams to fulfill orders and started selling to local health food stores. When you need a relief valve, plan a reshuffle. This to me sounds just like RedQ and other announcements. It will take the focus away from the real issues for a while. Allow AJ and Co to further plot against their customers and workforce whilst still receiving grossly insane wages.

Don't quite understand the timing.Qantas splits in two and goes back to the future with the 'real', but apparently unprofitable, Qantas flying overseas and Australian Airlines resurrected for Domestic operations but minus it's Tullamarine maintenance hanger.Then BB announces he's leaving JS and the aviation industry? They say timing is everything so there must be some reason behind all of this. While I'm guessing no-one will be too saddened by BB's departure at least he's honest enough to admit that he is really a businessman first and was only interested in Airlines as an academic excercise while at the Boston School of Management.

With Alan Joyce approaching almost four years in the top job at Qantas, the airline's board appears to have made a call that it is time to start thinking seriously about succession planning.


The most likely internal candidates for the top gig at the Flying Kangaroo - Simon Hickey, Jayne Hrdlicka and Lyell Strambi - have all been given new empires of their own to run.



Hickey, the boss of Qantas's biggest money spinner, the Frequent Flyer division, is seen as the man most likely at this stage to take over from Joyce when the time eventually comes for a change of CEO. But in the meantime, he will have what some describe as mission impossible: turning around Qantas's loss-making and heavily unionised international operations.



While Hickey will take over as CEO of Qantas International under the split announced today, Hrdlicka, until now the head of strategy and technology, will become the CEO of Qantas's low-cost airline, Jetstar.



Strambi, a former Ansett and Virgin Atlantic executive who has been Qantas's head of operations, will become boss of Qantas domestic.



Although it will be an easier task than Hickey's, Strambi will still have his job cut out for him in the coming months as Qantas attempts to fend off Virgin Australia's aggressive attempt to win over lucrative business travellers.



Big surprise



But perhaps the biggest surprise today is the departure of Jetstar's chief executive, Bruce Buchanan, who was viewed as Joyce's right-hand man. Buchanan will remain at Jetstar over the next six months to assist in the change of baton to Hrdlicka, and will also offer "consultancy services" for a further 18 months.



Rob Gurney, Qantas's head of commercial and freight, will also leave the Flying Kangaroo.



At first blush, the shake-up has not been interpreted as an attempt to copy Virgin Australia's ownership changes, which resulted in it splitting its international and domestic operations into two separate companies. That restructure, completed in March, will allow foreign institutional investors, and airlines such as Etihad, to invest in Virgin's domestic business.



Rather, the biggest shake-up of Qantas's senior echelons since Joyce took over from Geoff Dixon in late 2008 is seen as an internal management reshuffle with an eye to succession planning.



Significantly, the reshuffle will also result in the airline breaking out the financial performance of Qantas's premium international operations. Although Qantas disclosed last year during the height of its damaging industrial dispute that the international operations had lost more than $200 million, it has not previously given investors an insight into its performance.



In sum then, the appointment of Hickey and Hrdlicka, the latter a former Bain consultant, in operational roles now gives them a chance to make their pitch for the top job when Joyce eventually departs.

Two other points come to mind now:

The 'Bain & Co' faction in QF management continues its ascendancy with these latest moves. The new 'strategy' department has nearly 1000 staff now. Almost of them ex Bain.

Buchanan is from their arch enemy - Boston Consulting Group, so its likely that this played a significant role in his removal.

Additionally, its likely that there is a couple of 'known unknowns' in this move as well. That is, something Bruce has said or done has significantly upset Eileen and the board.

What that 'thing' is, we will never know, but its of interest never the less.

There is no doubt that bb has left a legacy for the airline industry - in particular his complicity in the demise of the profession of the airline pilot, his abuse of (foreign) labour, and his de-humanisation of the workforce - sorry - that should be "team memebers".

The term "delusions of grandeur" comes to mind.

Emirates flags tie up with Qantas
 
The newspaper said Emirates president Tim Clark suggested in an interview that management at both airlines had moved on from the acrimony that ended a previous plan to elevate the existing interline agreement to a formal code share.
"I look at the way Qantas is today, and I think they would benefit from us as we would benefit from them," Clark was quoted as saying.

Emirates could now be Qantas' longhaul carrier, the traditional longhaul is unprofitable... Sell them the 380's and retire/sell the 747's and 767's big profits all round, Joyce ends his rein as CEO on a massive wicket!
