New destinations for V Australia
Rumours floating around of possible new destinations and extra aircraft.
Hong kong rumour has been floating for a while and SFO has been the talk for the last week as QF is pulling off the route and it links up well with virgin america and atlantic also another T7 maybe this year? anybody else hearing anything different................ |

Nice to see the new entrant starting their own rumour mill re new destinations.
Dallas was rumoured in QF for about 25 years..of course, it hasn't started yet but..... And then there was Chicago; I think one service went there before we pulled out. The destination rumours helped many a long hour pass on long haul sectors. |

Would be interested to know the depth of your knowledge of the economics of the 777. If it isn't good for aus/asia, perhaps you should be selling your expertise to Cathay, Asiana, KAL, China Southern, Malaysian, and Singapore and PAL. All of whom periodically operate 777's to Aus and NZ. Could be others too, but that's probably enough to make the point. FWIIW. 777 payload/range capability shifts, around the 12 hour mark. Give or take a bit for the various models. ( Longer, payload drops to accommodate the fuel : Shorter and payload becomes landing weight limited.) Maui |
It doesn't matter how far you fly it. If you can fill it up to anywhere near MZFW then you'll make pretty good money. V expect to make a profit on it at around 220T.

Have operated 200 and 300's on shorthaul domestic. Always full and making gazillions. Also operated them on 6 hour sectors with a full belly and full pax. But then again there is no money in freight is there, is there?? Extra long sectors is where they excel, but they are good at shorter ranges as well. 330 may be a bit cheaper and therefore more suited to skinny routes, but if you have the bum's the 777 is a far better proposition. Try travelling in the back of a 330/340 for anything more than a couple of hours and see how it feels. Maui |

Sorry to bruise the ego, Maui... maybe the big green and white aircraft you saw was Eva Air. Unless it was a one off, i have never seen a scheduled CX 777 fly to Aus! I have been travelling back to Aus for well over 20 Years, and unfortunately for the past 15 years have been stuck on the Bus. It would be great to have the tripler as an option... i would get home quicker and have more seats to choose from!

Been away from work for a bit, but the last I heard was the possability that the BNE - AUH may transit SIN...
Thats all I got :) As a new entrant airline to the asia route, I think we would stuggle to fill the 777 without substantial on-carriage from an established network airline partnership. That would be the only way you would see the 777 and not the A330 doing Asia with a dirty big Virgin on the tail... SQ,CX, MH, QF, EK, EY, KE, JL, BA all use high capacity wide bodies but have built up customer bases and widespread networks (many, now suppliment A380/747/777's with A330's/767's to enable increased frequency). New entrant airlines like many of the Chinese carriers (and even EK, and EY just a couple of years ago) used smaller capacity wide bodies like the 330 and 340 to establish the routes they sought to build. All depends on who VBH can get into bed with to sell tickets for us to suppliment a relatively new customer base in Oz. So, with regard to the 777 being the right airline for Asia; I agree, it is not and, I agree that it is... :) Bi-partisan enough for y'all? With regards to new destinations on top of a potential SIN stop on the way to AUH, I don't reckon anything will happen for a while yet. There will be new orders for the 777 to enable daily SYD-AUH, more frequency on the BNE-AUH and the introduction of MEL-AUH aswell as increasing MEL-LAX and BNE-LAX first. I make it about 4 more frames to enable that alone; and a couple of years to bed the existing routes in before decent further expansion. At one of the roadshows many months ago, there was one statement above all others (maybe except for "I just wish I could tell you how good this new product at VB is going to be, but you will just have to wait and see... Damn it is good!") that stil stays in my head today, and may lend a clue to the growth potential of the 777 operation. He said, "I have never seen an airline go broke by having not enough planes, but I have seen plenty go broke by having too many..." He'll get the routes right first, one by one, before launching a Branson style (ironic heh) attack on the WORLD!!! But, what would I know... ;) The 330 will be the growth vehicle for new destinations... Mark my words ;) |

Fools.They couldnt turn a profit if their life's depended on it. Absolute scramble in the village to find ways of making money rather than losing it. Why dont they buy an Antanov and freight manure to the Solomons as that is about the only other option for them to turn a profit, as none of their other enterprises work well. How long have shareholders shares sat below $0.60 now since the float years and years ago at $2.65 ??
Time to get rid of theose at the helm of this gravy train and time to bring in somebody who can do more than rape the profits from the place for their own executive pockets. Where are all their Mcdonalds graduates now ? |

New VA Destinations
What about converting one or two of the aircraft into freighters? Possibly allowing F/O's and CF/Os to use these cargo only routes as a means for progression within the company?
I dunno what destinations might need a freighter service, but maybe a military contract, or freight to the middle east etc.. |
I dont know if this is relevant or not, but where I work we have almost 100 777s 200/200er/200lr/300/300er we operate them on sectors as short as 45 minutes and as long as 16 hours 30 mins..and we seem to be making money...

This is not the bogey that some make it out to be. Assuming 13 LD3 for max passenger load baggage, space left in the rear hold will take 3 LD6 and 1 LD3 for a volume of about 31.5 m^3. The bigger door would allow 2 96x125 pallets plus 1 LD3 for a total of 27.5m^3. So in terms of space ( volume) there is no disadvantage with the smaller door.

SOPS. Singapore Airlines run 777`s from SIN/CGK/SIN as just one of their 777 routes. Always packed solid front to back and a tidy earner for them.:D
