My understanding is the flight attendant situation is nothing to do with the airline as they are employed by the Norfolk government and that the wage cut is to bring them in line with wage conditions on the island. Therefore PTI ask your own government and don't blame the airline. I suppose any job in this climate is better than no job or why don't you simply stay with OJ if the conditions are so good.
ASY68 no chance of Bne -Mel restarting as it never made money and was only kept going because of the presence of Nauru House and the fact that the airline head office was Melbourne. Now with both gone it will never happen.
EWL thanks for the support. The network is busy just not in your region but hopefully watch this space

Pine Tree Island

Norfolk Air is a Norfolk GSE - Norfolk Government Sponsored Enterprise.
If jobs are being advertised on Norfolk Island then they would presumably be regulated by N I legislation and the levels of pay offered would fall under this legislation. Levels of pay available on N I are generally lower than those offered on mainland AUS because of the exemption, residents of NI receive, from paying AUS income tax.
You would of course be aware of this if you live on N I.

Was tlod that Ozjet crew on Norfolk earn same money as their Ozzie colleagues, but not taxed. Good arrangement and not surprised it is coming to an end, and maybe the new boys don't want to end up in the same financial as Ozjet.

Tks, Feenix and Flying Monk - much as I suspected as I felt PTI's query was a bit selective and didn't quite represent the situation.

Answer is pretty simple overall, if you don't like the offer, don't accept it - voting with your feet is far more effective than whinging and bitching. If the offer is SO bad, then there won't be any takers and whomever will be forced to up the ante. What's difficult to understand about that?

Still wondering if there are other benefits in lieu of the pay cut .............. anyone?

Still wondering if there are other benefits in lieu of the pay cut .............. anyone?
Hourly rate is around $13.00 + per hour, 3 weeks Annual Leave with at least one day a week to be served in the office, cleaning, rostering or answering phones, whatever. Can sell sick leave not used, so can make a little more each year.

(Obviously CM's on a little more).

To be complete, there is staff travel avaiable.

BTW not really care whos made the $13.00 (and a little more) figure, but Norfolk Air and Our Airline worked out the operating cost and looks like we are some of those one to have to contribute to the change to Our Airline.

SO who is thanked for that $13.00 an hour.

Only so many ways to sharpen a pencil so I suppose if you can cut back $10K from each Cabin Crew that is a start.

Peter B, I read your arguement...mmmm...so they should base flight crew on the island and pay them less as well. I shall mention that to the Assembly so they can take that on board as another cost saver in the change over.

MAYBE YOU BE NEXT!!

OH, yes, not winging at all, just telling it as it is and as for walking with feet..............well, yes, walking with feet is the flavour of the month for quite some people I think. :ok:

Mach E Avelli 13th Mar 2009 12:40

Peter Brady if they were doing the same job as their mainland counterparts, why wouldn't they be paid the same? The fact that they pay no tax is partly offset by the high cost of commodities and the isolation. A lack of tax on Norfolk may seem like their good luck but it also comes with a lack of a few other goodies we take for granted on the mainland - like ready road access to any medical attention we desire, tertiary education for the kids, variety of entertainment etc.
At least that was the reasoning applied by the original Chief Pilot at Ozjet.
Now times have changed it seems. If times are so tough that a few people will make all the difference to the bottom line by wearing a pay cut, how much greater would be the difference if senior staff made comparable sacrifices, percentage-wise, to see this economic crisis out?

How about going right back to the times where RON went to HNL and Japan

Wishfull thinking...
Those were the days. Maybe five passengers to Kagoshima if we were lucky and zero or at the best one or two pax to HNL from Majuro. Losses in the millions but who cared. Best job in the world for the pilots. Pity about the poor Nauruans back on their island with run down hospital, wrecked schools, with no funds for either and the hosties on a huge salary of 20 bucks a week while training and a 100 bucks a week while flying. Tax free of course...

Pine Tree Island 13th Mar 2009 13:13

Those at Norfolk may not pay tax from the salary but please understand the following, GST is higher than Aus, a medivac costs around $30K (no return), just about everything needs to be shipped in, children go to boarding school in Aus or NZ, ...well I could go on.

Those on the road maintance get a little more per hour than on offer, but some do appreciate that that job was offered as an alternative if not happy!!

Is not the Aus Government looking at taking ova, anyway.

I guess then at least one don't need to pay much tax on $13 an hour.

Mach E Avelli, thank you for understanding, those offering the positions dont seem to at the moment.

Just to finish....WHO SOLD US OUT??????????,

On the same sort or topic, Theres a white 737 Classic at YMML too...Anyone know what it is and doing?

Cheers,

INU's sister ship about to be painted in Norfolk colours for the take over the Norfolk contract from OJ i.e. operated by Our Airline

Cheers for the info guys
Think you'll find it was in fact ex-DJ 737 VH-VBT.

It resembles a classic as it hasn't got winglets............

Like it or not the fact is that Our Airline will remain and probably the last to do so in this region. The Nauru Govt just simply will not let it fold. Many in the past have tried and vanished overnight. Not an easy environment like in populated Australia where business is easy. You have to have really good REASON to go on surviving in this region. For Our Airline it's a must! There's no other way. You're talking about an airline who's been around since 1972. Some of you were not even born let alone thought of! They've seen the best and the worst of times, but they're still here! BRING IT ON BABE! HUH!

ithinkso 14th Mar 2009 12:15

Simply a must

I agree, this airline simply MUST go broke.

Gawd, two airplanes!!! Wow thats one trip each a week to Nauru. Great business plan. The Government of Nauru simply wont let it go broke..... the Government of Nauru IS broke.

Only a matter of time. As everyone who has been around for a while knows, Norfolk is a graveyard for airlines. SIMPLY unviable..

I wish them luck.... No i guess i dont, its just simply stupid really.

ITS is back on his hobby horse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ASY68 15th Mar 2009 07:09

The Naurian Govt. is backed by Taiwan on this. Taiwan is paying for the aircraft as a good will jesture to the Naurian Govt.

And I have to agree, Our Airline won't go bust.

A new BNE based GM & a gentle reminder of [big] favours owed which was delivered to several key Govt depts and their respective pollie masters have given 'our airline' a slightly unofficial wider inclusive emphasis on the the word 'our'.

This is not the a typical case of aviation operational economics and rational balance sheet/P&L management - indeed, chicken little may be waiting a while for the sky to fall with this one.

AT
:E

PS: Remember it was the Prime Minister's Dept that upon request during a call from level 49 of 80 Collins Street Melb; that g'teed payment for a few tonnes of fuel that enabled the release of one of their* planes in held hock at a not so friendly airport in early 2004.

similarly, forget not the bigger picture of the "Pacific Panama" where the downplayed Opens Skies segment of the last ill advised APEC soiree which made the likes of 'our airline' a potential starter in the race for future [defacto] Aussie slots and therefore; itself an attraction for external interests who would otherwise not be able to field a team.

(*duly acknowledge fact of same country, same a/c, but different trading identity)

AFBL 15th Mar 2009 13:35

I talk the the guys often and their jobs are safe as houses. They have the luxury of Brisbane-base and their super paid etc. What more can you ask? And a great bunch of guys to work with at the end of the day! You don't see much threads from them because they're happy...simple as that!

feenix 16th Mar 2009 03:37

ITS You really are a sad piece of work. Looking back at your previous posts you don't have much good to say about anyone. You have been wishing OA ill for years now and still they survive and expand, doesn't that show you they are a new setup determined to last. It seems the facts can be found by simply reversing anything you say. You must have been hurt in the past as the chip on your shoulder is massive. If history shows me anything else I guess I sit back now and wait for your personal attack.
ASY68 Taiwan doesn't pay for the aircraft the airline does. There has been assistance granted but at the end of the day the airline stands alone.
Zigzag it may have been OJ but the writer said classic and I know VH-NLK spent quite a bit of time in Melbourne doing firecharters as I was in it

Good onya F, I agree with you !!! ITS must have two as he couldn't be silly enough just pu####g one, Sounds like sour grapes!!!!!! all jokes aside its tough times out there and we should all hope we have jobs six months down the track including VB, Ozjet, & QF.

ithinkso 17th Mar 2009 12:23

Time will tell

Boys,

time will tell, time will tell.
History is repeating, as it tends to do. I remember a time when Air Nauru had numerous aircraft. Its position geographically and financially makes it unviable. Economically Nauru has nothing to support any kind of growth, only retraction. I have never heard of anyone going to Nauru for a holiday, have you. I think, that if they offered free tickets, it would be unlikely that they would attract a punter.

As far as their employees: F/o's with the luxury of living in Brisbane, I dont think they enjoy too many luxuries on what they are paid. F/a's on $20 a week, its probably more than they are worth.

Sooner or later, the donors will stop paying for luxuries like aeroplanes. They will get smart and donate rice, basically as a humanitarian effort, just to keep the locals alive.

At the moment I am running my air conditioner at full power, and yes it is running on fossil fuel. I like to think that I am doing my best to expedite global warming, raising global sea levels and helping to sink this t*rd that just wont flush.

And, when the final blow is dealt, (like last time), you will all agree most heartily.

Do your hours boys, hopefully you can get out, and join the rest of your old mates in the sand pit.

GOOD LUCK!! xx

feenix 17th Mar 2009 22:46

ITS if nothing else you're predictable. All your facts wrong and as I said reverse everything you say to get the facts, but then we know you're just a sad barst--d trying to get a bite. Where are the moderators cause I know others have been banned for being far less vindictive and here you are praying for the death of a nation
