Chopper down at Warragamba

From ninemsn:

Two people dead in helicopter crash

Two people died when a helicopter crashed on Sydney's outskirts, police said.

The helicopter left Bankstown airport and crashed in a remote area of Bents Basin Reserve, Silverdale, near Warragamba Dam.

The area is only accessible by four-wheel drive.

The two dead, believed to me men, were the only people on board, police said.

A Bankstown Airport spokesman said the men were flying a Robinson helicopter.

"It's a small two-seater helicopter," he said.

It was likely the pair was on a training flight, he said.

A FLYING instructor and his student were killed today in a helicopter crash while on a routine 60-minute training flight on Sydney's outskirts.

Several witnesses had called police to report a helicopter spinning out of control shortly and plummeting into dense bushland in the Bents Basin Recreational Reserve, near Warragamba, shortly before 9am.

Emergency services, including police, ambulance and helicopters swarmed over the heavily timbered area with a National Parks and Wildlife Officer discovering the wreckage about 5km inside the recreation area.

A doctor and paramedic were lowered to the crash site from the NRMA care flight helicopter where the two male occupants of the small two-seater aircraft, a Robinson 22, were pronounced dead.

The NSW Coroner John Abernethy has attended the crash site.

Police said they were first alerted that a helicopter was missing over the Warragamba region about 8.45am (AEST) today.

Green Valley Local Area Police Commander Roger McIntyre said police believed the two dead men was the instructor, aged in his 60s, and a younger student.

Acting Commander McIntyre said the helicopter had left Bankstown Airport on a 60 minute training flight at 8.10am (AEST).

He said some time during the flight it was broadcast by air traffic control that a helicopter had gone missing.

"Police are maintaining the crime scene for the ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) who are going to control the investigation of this air crash," Commander McIntyre said near the scene.

NRMA CareFlight spokesman Peter Heath said they had been called after "a member of the public had reported a helicopter flying out of sight followed by a severe bang".

Mr Heath said when they found the crash site, a doctor and a paramedic were winched down to the wreck, where they declared both men deceased.

"It was timbered country with 50 foot (15m-high) treetops," he said.

"The crash site was almost unrecognisable from the air."
