Virgin Blue To Fly Australia-NZ Routes Next Year - Report

WELLINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Discount carrier Virgin Blue plans to fly to New Zealand from next year, the Australian Financial Review newspaper reported Monday.

The Australian discount carrier sent a team to New Zealand a week ago to hold talks with airports and other industry figures, the paper said.

It is also examining other potential short-haul international routes in the South Pacific, such as Fiji.

"We have eight aircraft earmarked for international services by the end of 2004," Chief Executive Brett Godfrey told the newspaper.

He said the decision to fly to New Zealand will depend on the outcome of negotiations for Qantas Airways to take an equity stake in Air New Zealand.

Godfrey said he thought there would be "good grounds to oppose" a Qantas and Air New Zealand tie-up, but would wait to see details of a deal.
