Sydney Airport to say "G'day" to Emirates everyday.
Sydney Airport has secured a major breakthrough in competition following Federal Government agreement to allow Emirates Airlines to operate daily services to Australia’s major international gateway.
Emirates’ expansion in the Australian market follows approval of three additional weekly services to Sydney by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson which was announced during the signing of a new bilateral air services agreement with the UAE by the Australian Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile during his recent Middle East Trade Mission.
Sydney Airport CEO Tony Stuart said the breakthrough confirmed that Sydney Airport remained the country's No 1 international business and leisure gateway.
"This breakthrough could not come at a better time for the industry, which has been crying out for additional capacity," Mr Stuart said. "It adds competition to a capacity constrained sector, and opens up a new and viable route to Europe via Dubai.
"Sydney Airport has embarked on a deliberate strategy of increasing competition in key markets – both in the air by securing increased access rights and on the ground through multi-users terminals such as T1 (international) and now T2 (domestic).
"Securing increased access for Emirates is just the first step in our growth strategy.
"Along with our tourism industry partners, we have lobbied hard for the last three years to increase Emirates’ access. The UAE government, Minister Vaile and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, are to be commended. "
The expansion in air rights for Emirates is a shot in the arm for Australia’s inbound tourism industry as Sydney Airport prepares for new and additional services from a number of carriers.
Taiwanese carrier EVA is starting services from November and Sydney Airport will also be welcoming new services by Air China, China Eastern, China Airlines, Air Vietnam and Air Vanuatu. In addition Qantas, Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines have announced capacity increases for the coming Northern Winter Season.
Mr Stuart said these increases could be added to the re-invigoration of the South American market by Lan Chile and Aerolineas Argentinas.
"All this points to a continuing steady improvement in international travel into Sydney and a welcome boost to Australia's tourism market."
Mr Stuart said Sydney Airport looked forward to hosting Emirates' daily flights as soon as the airline had finalised scheduling agreements and aircraft utilisation.
Emirates added capacity could only enhance the potential for increased tourism and business traffic between the Middle East and Australasia, he said, especially as the new air services agreement provided a framework for the introduction of additional passenger and freight services between Australia and the United Arab Emirates.
Voted again this year as one of the Top 10 airports in the world, Sydney Airport has 42 international airlines offering services to all corners of the globe.
Emirates is consistently voted by passenger polls as the best airline in the world for service.
