If you don't want to be shot by a Police officer, stand completely still about 5 metres in front of them. Not their fault because of the stupidly incompetent training and currency they get? Or because they don't go out and train off their own bat at a range? Both.
Most interesting you should say that, Beryllium Erbium. An aquaintance of mine, now regrettably deceased, was at one stage of his life a Firearms Instructor for a Police Force here in Australia (I won't say which one) and he used to say much the same thing. ".....stand perfectly still because he/she won't hit you. If you run, you might just run into the path of the bullet...."
His actual words summarising the subject were; 'The average Police Officer is more of a danger to both themselves AND the general public than anything else, when it comes to the use of their issued sidearm!"

He was most scathing of the amount of actual training, ie using the firearm, that was given to the Officers.

And he was a very good Instructor as well. Coached me over a few months with the use of a Beretta 9mm and got me to the stage where I could 'double tap' a target at 15 yards with good accuracy.

Southern handler

thanks - was only looking at images and trying (incorrectly) to place the event

To add to the rumours ...

No knowledge myself but talking to people who know local AFP officers (none of whom were involved in this) the internal rumours are the perpetrator wanted to be arrested and treated for mental illness - hence the use of a gun (serious crime) but firing away from people.
