MERGED: Air Vanuatu ATR accident Port Vila

Yesterday morning an Air Van ATR doing a single engine approach at Port Vila,Vanuatu following an engine failure.After touch down it departed off the runway at speed and took out a parked Unity Airlines BN2 and stopped short of taking out the same Airlines PA-31-350 my mates son flies for Unity but will not be flying that Islander again,nose section and fin/rudder completely torn off. Will try and post some pics.

I wonder if the pilot may have been too hasty with full reverse pitch on live engine on touch down? Easy to lose directional control. Similar event to a CASA 212 at Tarawa, Kiribati, many years ago after single engine landing and pilot hauled in full reverse pitch on other engine. Wing severely bent after directional control lost and aircraft hit close-in palm trees on side of airstrip. That's where simulator training is handy as its a bit risky to practice max reverse pitch on touch down on one engine in real life

Do ATRs and “directional control” belong in the same sentence? At least on landing as pax in the back you wonder some times!

ATR in Vanuatu takes out Islanders

Takes out Britten Norman Islanders, not locals I'm told.

An Air Vanuatu ATR-72 made an emergency landing in Port Vila today. The aircraft, which had 39 passengers and 4 crew aboard, landed in a gentle tail wind.

According to a statement issued by Air Vanuatu Ltd, the aircraft “was involved in a runway excursion. The incident occurred at the end of the runway on landing”.

Neither the pilots nor the passengers on board suffered any injuries. The Civil Aviation Authority Vanuatu is investigating the incident.

The aircraft was inbound to Port Vila from Tanna. It suffered loss of power to one engine as it overflew the island of Erromango, about 20 minutes away from Bauerfield airport in Port Vila.

Multiple sources told the Vanuatu Daily Post that there was smoke in the cabin when the aircraft landed.

You clowns down there should do some more basic maintenance training rather than theory.... When you store aircraft they are ferried to a dry place not sitting in green grass with a lake of water next to them.
Unbelievable worlds best incompetence, where is your genius regulator everything else is over regulated. Fly them to Alice Springs ....

They’re not in storage..they’re just in a line waiting for paint and C checks prior to sale to some third world airline..the last one in the hangar looked like it was getting windows blanked for freight
