I don't believe 78% of the passengers from London are finishing their journey at Perth.
Which would indicate people from Melbourne are taking alternative route/airlines to go to/from London.

Again, access to Staff travel and/or EFF will show you that the load factors in/out of Perth are very good.
I have heard that even management were surprised at Perth/London/Perth itself providing much of that load, but there it is.
Yeah it's being pushed as ''the way" for sales. My folks go to europe all the time and have it pushed to them but they decline.
that said, it makes a lot of sense as a route itself given the small aeroplane/niche route, that's what the jet was made for.

If you are a MEL passenger and in particular a premium passenger I know they are pushing MEL-PER-LHR as the only QF metal option.
You can go via A380 to SIN but a 7 hour wait doesn’t work for the majority. Some first passengers that will pay anything and want P class are even going via SYD but only the die hard QF lovers. The rest go EK.
For J pax most save the 7 hour wait and have no choice now.
By removing a 500 seat aircraft and going to a 236 seater you don’t need to be a genuis to work out they are going to fill the replacement from both MEL/PER to LHR.
But cut capacity by that much to LHR and showing that your now filling one route sure is genius.
If you had an option to go SIN or PER to LHR from MEL and it was still full from PER then I would truly pronounce the game changed.

There is the qf37 if you want to go via Singapore. That would be a 90 minute transit. I’m not sure it goes every day though. But I take your point about First.
edit: it does go daily

Not a 380 and no P

QF could probably have another machine running Melboure - Singas- London and still do ok with all of them. It certainly looks as though they could use the extra capacity. I’d wonder how much is being lost not providing this. Project Sunrise is a long way off coming to fruition yet, might it be wise to corner a bigger slice of the Melbourne market in the mean time?

Have done the QF9 MEL - PER domestic sector twice now. The economy seats are extremely uncomfortable. No way could I sit in one for 17 hours.. Four hours was enough.
Just did 5 hours SIA Singapore - Perth , economy in the 787. Totally different comfort factor. Easy on the backside.

Qantas management must be pretty happy with the results of their latest foray into ULH - AvWeek says they are looking expanding their ULH fleet with either 777-8X or a long range version of the A350.

I did this trip to London and back recently. It was full both ways. It was pretty uncomfortable in zoo class, stuck in a middle seat, but still better than going through Dubai and their wretched security (having a metal hip this makes a big difference).
Preferable to Emirates particularly in the quality of the food and not having to sit trapped, often for about an hour, behind a mountain of plastic wrappers getting horribly dehydrated because EK only serve water and juice in tiny containers and nobody can get out of their seats. Is this deliberate? (Thanks you QF for the water bottle provided) . The entertainment choices were great and I had no jet lag at all.
The only complaint was arriving at LHR at 5am and having at least three plane loads of travellers being dealt with by just ONE immigration officer for non EU passports, (no E gate for non EU people) I was in that queue for about 1.5 hours and I was near the front. So not a great time of day to arrive, Heathrow need to get their act together there.

Maybe you're right pilotchute. If someone comes here to postulate how clever they are, it's best to read your evidence first.
