Aviation Herald is not gospel but probably in the ball park.

….and it was a 789 not a 777 as the media reported.

Well, what actually happened.
I think you nailed it in your title.

It hit a bird. It turned back.

I did enjoy the article in one of the daily rags that said it hit a bird and began leaking fuel from the wing. Fuel leak... fuel dump, same same.
