Sydney Airport Rated Australia's Worst

No surprises here.

Pretty disgraceful that we still have airports which don't have enough bays.

Often see heavies at both SYD and MEL sitting on the taxiway burning gas waiting for a bay to become available.

Only business where you can push out a rubbish product year after year and still make millions..

Sydney Airport has again achieved the lowest ranking of the country's four-biggest airports with passengers concerned about kerbside congestion at both its international and domestic terminals.

In its annual report on the state of the airports, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warned that the country's four largest airports – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth – will have to invest more if they are to resolve congestion, accommodate future passenger growth and improve service levels.

"It is likely that the current infrastructure at monitored airports will be under increasing pressure in future years given evidence of aeronautical and land-side congestion at some airports," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.

Brisbane was the only airport to improve its quality of service, while Sydney Airport's overall quality of service was again rated the lowest among the four biggest airports.

Melbourne Airport' average quality of services was also unchanged at ''satisfactory'', while passengers' ratings of Tullamarine remained ''good''. Airlines' ratings fell from ''satisfactory'' to ''poor''.

''Airlines again expressed concerns with the standard and availability of certain aircraft-related facilities, particularly aircraft parking bays,'' the ACCC said of Melbourne Airport.

''There is evidence of emerging capacity issues in terminal forecourt areas and connecting road system.''

Sydney Airport's rating for quality of service was unchanged at ''satisfactory'', which was again the lowest among the four largest airports. Passengers' ratings of Kingsford Smith was unchanged at satisfactory, while airlines' ratings were lower at ''poor''.

''Sydney Airport's low quality of service ratings and relatively low investments in the face of on-going increases in demand, suggest that needed investments have not been forthcoming,'' the ACCC said in its report.

''While options for capacity expansion may be limited by regulatory constraints, there may be scope for addressing concerns with the quality of some aircraft-related and passenger-related services.''

All four airports also reported higher car parking revenues in the 2012-13 financial year.

Sydney Airport has the highest car-parking revenue per space, as well as the highest car-parking margin per car park space, of the country's four-biggest airports.

Travellers are slugged $56 for a car park for eight hours at Sydney, $32 for three hours and $16 for an hour. In comparison, Melbourne Airport charges $56 for eight hours, $28 for three and $14 for an hour.

The ACCC said the airports' revenues and profit margins had increased due to continued growth in passengers, which had also helped boost what they earn from car parking.

''Since 2002-03 all monitored airports have reported significant real earnings growth but in the same period ratings of average quality of aeronautical services have decreased at three out of the four airports,'' it said.

The competition watchdog said airlines had expressed concerns about a lack of parking bays at Melbourne Airport, which had worsened in recent years.

''Melbourne Airport faces runway capacity constraints in the medium-term as well as challenges enhancing the effectiveness of its land-side infrastructure,'' it said.

Sydney Airport said it ‘‘continues to listen and respond to our passengers’ feedback’’, and as part of its long-term plans intended to improve ground transport.

It also emphasised that it had invested about $2.4 billion in improving its infrastructure since 2002, and planned to invest a further $1.2 billion over the next five years.

“We continue to focus on developing the airport in a way that responds to the changing needs of our passengers and airlines,” Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Mather said.

When did Sherlock Holmes start reviewing airports? Or was it his mate, Captain Bleeding Obvious?

Amazing !!! It's as if we are proud of that dreafull shameful fact:-( The gateway to Australia by Air, Christ what a joke it's an embarrassment to us all!

"All four Airports also reported higher car parking revenues in the 2012-2013 year"...................that says it all

The bloody planes are the problem, get rid of them then they can build lots more car spaces!

The word 'infrastructure' only applies to where they make the most $$$ where Airports are concerned so bays, Rwy's & associated facilities don't figure into their greedy plans.

Syd is hamstrung by Pollies & their dumb assed rules

Melb is a huge joke from well before you even reach the drome!

Brissy?..............well let's not go there ( I wish)

Perth? Nice place, lovely people but the Airport? hmmmmm, again let's not go there either!

Essentially we are at the bottom of the Globe & we shall 4ever stay there in the dark ages with zero fwd thinking & expanded opportunities for the minority only not the collective group!

These essential pieces of infrastructure should NOT be in private commercial hands. I want them taken back under government control and properly run - for the benefit of our future generations.

And by the way, Longlats, you are a coward for a personal comment like that. May Karma revisit you.

LongLats - us Tower guys don't usually give track miles, as you're usually within 10 or so when you're handed over from Approach.

What people don't seem to notice is Sydney alone turns over a billion $ a year, yet pays no tax..what about the rest?? I heard the holding company resides in the Bahamas. Have to hand it to the Mcbank boys very clever.
So sorry people no money left for infrastructure, it all left last week!!

Wait a minute, that thing at Mascot - that is an airport? It looks like a shopping centre with an expensive car park........and the occasional aircraft gate. You could have fooled me.

Having flown to most major airports around the globe I would have to say that Sydney would be my number one worst airport in the world with Brisbane / Perth and Melbourne making it into my top 10.

Have you had the pleasure of visiting West Africa? Port Harcourt or Lagos are real eye openers.

One vote for the American on director, always cracks me up! Rather speak to someone enjoying their job than someone miserable.

Agreed. I like him. re track miles I always add 20% to Director's number anyway. It always make me laugh as we pass abeam SOSIJ doing 250 kts heading south and they tell me 20 track miles.

Anyway, everyone knows the airport sucks. Carparks, hotels and duty free are the only things that have been upgraded. The carpet in arrivals has been there for 10 years, the air conditioning is always set to about 27 degrees to save money, the arrivals hall is a disgrace with often literally thousands of people trying to get through four arrival lanes, a shortage of gates for arriving aircraft, buses used for a remote bay, equipment often protruding into bays as there is a shortage of parking space for it (particularly adjacent to the freight apron - if you can call it an apron). What else can readers add?

- Gestapo like slot management
- Late refuellers
- Delayed pushbacks
- Delayed taxiing
- Curfew issues

And for the record I like old mate in ATC with the Yank accent. He doesn't dick about, perhaps he is ex LAX? Be interested to find out.

Interesting!

As an Australian that resides in the US (20 years) I make an annual trip to PER via SYD from LAX. If SYD is the worst then I have to wonder if American airports were rated at all as I think SYD beats ANY American airport. Maybe its just my Australian bias or since my first port of entry to Australia is SYD I think to myself, "ahhh, its good to be home." Compared to SYD I think American airports are filthy.

Everything is relative. Once you have experienced the dilapidated facilities, corrupt officials, none existant services and incompetent ATC of some African airports, Australian airports are a breath of fresh air.
