A321 for NZ?
Anyone else noticed that on NZ's new domestic gates in AKL, they have been setup with room for A321 and had 321 markings painted.
Whats the chance that NZ could convert a few 320 orders?

I certainly think the 321 with sharklets would be in consideration for regional ops, but it would be a long time away for domestic. Having said that some of those domestic flights have been bursting at the seams lately....
I think AirNZ was waiting for there to be a slowdown in worldwide orders before they went for more aircraft, at current rates that looks like in about 15 years!

It amazes me that you can even be on an off-peak domestic A320 flight and it will be close to 100% full.
NZ seems to be able to get aircraft when it wants them, no matter what the back log is! Such as the 2x 77W as 12months notice, or the check extra A320 they are getting this year.

The first regional A320's (OJA-OJO) are around 11 years old now, there's been talk of A321 NEO's to replace them in another 4-5 years to provide a capacity increase on the TAS/PAC routes.

I don't think the 321 would be too big on domestic.... especially when it's peak hour. Air NZ used to run a 767-200 AKL-CHC (I think it was) years ago. Can't remember if they ran in into WLG too.
It would probably fit in quite nicely on the TBU, APW, RAR etc runs too.

I know for a fact that the sums were done on both the A318 and the A321 on NZ's domestic routes, back as far as 2007 - and they didn't add up.
The baby bus was considered not to be optimal, essentially the same kit and maintenance costs on a smaller frame therefore less revenue.
The 321 was too big for domestic routes.
Who knows - things may have changed since.

who knows.
i know that the jq 321's from sin to drw (4 hours ish) started to run in to payload issues with tempo reqmnts on drw. ldg wt limited?
how much they could lift out of wlg on a low qnh/icing condx day?
not that airnz would be silly enough to squeeze 220 seats in to one.
if any of that means anything?
