MERGED: Alan's still not happy......

A post from back in 2004 which I came across....
I do not believe that the Australian Government made any attempt to impede the deal with SQ to take News Corp's 50% of Ansett. That honour went to Selwyn Cushing.
At the time of Ansett's demise there were a lot of interesting bedfellows. At one stage QF themselves were having a tilt at AirNZ.
As to the relevance to today, there is none.
Sadly QF's "problems" are all of its own management's making.
I hate to ruin a good stoush so will go no further back in time than the late 90's.
Personally, I think our friend the Night Owl gives conspiratorial credit where it is not totally due.
Indeed Singapore plays a central role in this pantomine but for somewhat different reasons. By 2000 it had long become the HQ of one Brierley Investments, the major shareholder in AirNZ and therefore indirectly a major figure in the 50% of Ansett not owned by News Corp.
Air NZ had pre-emptive rights on the balance 50% of Ansett should it come up for sale.
News Corp wanted and needed to exit. They found a buyer in SQ and spent a lot of time stitching together a deal for AUD 500m that would ensure the recapitalisation and fleet renewal of Ansett and provide a footprint for the Star Alliance in Oceania.
Whilst I agree that AirNZ tried to blindside and outsmart SQ, this was only cobbled together in response to immense pressure from Selwyn Cushing and his fellow travellers who shared the same conflict of interest...namely being directors of both Brierley and AirNZ.
Air NZ,given the price they paid for the first 50% of Ansett, and through them Brierley, would have to make substantial write-downs on their investments (AirNZ in Ansett and Brierley in AirNZ) if the direct deal between Ansett and SQ went through.
Selwyn Cushing used his immense influence (and Brierley voting block) as Chairman of AirNZ to force AirNZ to bet the whole company.
Sure they banked on the NZ Govt to come to their rescue, and there was a certain amount of naive arrogance in thinking that SQ would pour good money after bad, but that all came after Selwyn Cushing (as Chairman of AirNZ and Brierley) decided to put HIS national carrier at risk to protect Brierley Investments balance sheet (which could ill afford to take a write down of that magnitude).
In my view the Hall of Shame is missing one potrait...and one that is very much alive and indeed very wealthy at the expense of
many.
Well he may be knighted but I suggest he be better stuffed and mounted in the above Hall of Shame.

Virgin gets green light for $350m raising
Looks like plan A failed. Gummint support looks like his last roll of the dice.

Alan was deliberately put in place to fail so that Dixon, Singleton et al could pick it up for a song. That much is obvious frommSingletons outburst over the Emirates tie up.
My guess is that Emirates is lobbying the Government right now about being allowed to acquire a major interest and thus solve the "bail out" problem.
I told you that QF would end up as an Emirates business name.

Alan has probably already told Canberra he will shut down QF if QF do not get government money.
The government may just be stupid enough to give Alan the money.
or
The government may just be stupid enough to call Alan's bluff.
Either way this is going to end badly

Reading comments in Crickey, it appears that Tony Abbott has no idea what AJ is on about or what he wants. Once again, Joyce seems to be running off on mant tangents at the same time, and achieving nothing, except making a bigger and bigger mess of everything.
I'm starting to think he is hiding some really big, bad news and he is desperatly trying to find away out of whatever it is, but he can't say what it is, without inducing total panic, so he is just going into an ever steeper spiral dive.

It will take a lot of turd polish to get QF shining again.
SOPS, very astute my friend. What is AJ hiding? Hmmmm, the current situation behind the scenes can be likened to a terrorist strike. Lots of 'chatter'. Well there is lots of QF chatter at the moment, whispers in the corridors, private phone calls and off site meetings taking place.
AND LOTS OF KEY PEOPLE AND MANAGERS BEING MOVED AROUND THE NETWORK AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS!

AJs bad news... QF to lose half a billion dollars this FY...the guy is the master of deflection.. None of this has anything to do with Virgin, had QF been a properly managed airline, there would be none of the current issues.... All we are seeing is the end of the line..... Success was had in preventing SQ partnering up with Ansett....after the AN collapse QF grew the Orange Fungus in place of capitalising mainline...now it's cannibalised yield the same way GO did with BA...
Dixon and Joyce.. You two have screwed and ruined QF.. I hope you enjoy your fancy lunches with Sydney's socialites...because 30,000 employees are paying the price for your fcukups...

I just thought Qantas was behaving like a 3 year old, lying on the floor kicking and screaming flailing its arms around, 'cause they didn't get their way.
Is everyone saying Qantas a fly on the window spill spinning around after being sprayed?
Wave the white flag. Raise your ticket prices. Give up the resultant market share. Get over it.
The Australian Aviation market is like the dark side of the force. "Always two there are. No more, no less".

Raise your ticket prices.
Add $5 to every ticket in economy, $15-$25 in Business, and maybe 25/100 for the long haul routes.
Does anyone know how many tickets are sold each year? It is simple maths. And at those small margins I doubt there would be a loss of sales.
VA should do the same. Would do wonders for the bottom line and solve much of the slash and burn mentality. You can only cost cut so far. And maybe QF has a lot of waste still, but fixing revenue is far easier but nobody does it.
