Barbara Ward is the current Associate Club Champion at the Australian Golf Club. Where does she find the time?
Qantas Frequent Flyers will soon be able to earn Qantas Points on the golf course when Qantas Golf Club tees off this summer.
Reading an accident report from the UK and couldn't help but notice this remark and the obvious parallels to closer to home. It was seen as a contributing factor in the incident which included multiple poor decisions by the crew
Interesting read from an SOP and CRM perspective.
Report: Thomas Cook B752 at Newcastle on Aug 17th 2013, flaps overspeed, fuel imbalance, landed below final fuel reserve
"He sensed that the airline was in turmoil due to a major internal re-organisation programme. The direct effect for him was that he had been told that he would be one of several captains who would be demoted to first officer in March 2014 and that his salary would reduce significantly. He was unhappy about this impending change and the matter weighed heavily on his mind at work, despite his best efforts to ignore it."

Just heard from my sister, (I can't quote what status she is, but she is an uber super high point person with Qantas....I know last year she flew First on QF 8 times),
Anyway...she left this morning to go from Perth to Alice Springs.
As she just emailed me
Shocked.....I thought I paid for Qantas service...and I get a water.
Shocked....I have no suitcases because the 717 can't carry them, so they have given me a T Shirt. How they expect me to carry on in the morning wearing just this is beyond me.
I know you fly for, xxxxxxx, but what the hell Hans happened to Qantas!?

yeah right, just like the 350 seater that burns 220,000kg crossing the Pacific.
DFW-SYD is what I'm assuming you are referring to .. that is NOT just "Crossing the Pacific" .. Whilst your numbers may be close to the truth for that sector (I think they are a little bit better in reality), there is no other aircraft that can deliver that product over that distance anyway so the derision is moot.
And in case anyone wants to start on 777 or 787 or whatever, other aircraft may be able to do the range, but not with the product. There are a large number of premium seats on the A380 which would not be provided on alternative machines. (bonus for economy people - they can stretch out)
After all, when the SP pioneered direct LAX-SYD it was only configured with 222 seats ...
Cane the company for being wrong by all means, but in this case, the A380 is superior to the 747 on the sector (which the 747 cannot do anyway) and particularly tying up with Emirates for a "round the world" A380 service.

It bothers me how successful the Boeing spin machine has been in bagging the "Guppy" where their version, the 748 has been a disaster for sales, a lot worse than the A380.
We should all support the A380, it provides and delivers a great product. After all, right or wrong (well documented fleet management mistakes aside on this thread) it is perceived as the LH flagship by the punters.

The A380 is a great aircraft for large hub to hub operations.
Outside of that, selling 450+ seats in small markets, particularly during off peak periods is extremely yield challenging.
There is a reason this aircraft has not been a commercial success.
IMHO the day of the 4 engine behemoth is coming to an end. With ever increasingly larger and more efficient twins, the A380 may see the boneyard sooner than most think.

She went to Alice for some sort of conference. A party of 25. No one got their bags. All bags arrived from Melbourne at 13.55 today, so I'm not sure what was going on.
I will work out the figures today and post them for that leg so we all have an accurate idea of what can be lifted. I still suspect it was a ground handling screw up.

A colleague tells me QF are rationalising some departments to a "Group Service Arrangement"
To reduce costs & duplication a single business unit will provide services to Mainline, QFlink, Cobham & Network (ie: Red tails)
However the unknown aspect, is why JQ have not been included in the "Group Service Agreement" for some departments.
I would have thought cost reductions would have included Silver tails in the process as well.

SOPs
It will carry 3000kgs baggage + or - depending on airframe with 125 passengers (ALL ADULTS with carry on included in their weight) So if people checkin an average in excess of 24kgs each there will be an issue. As I said I haven't had any issues BUT it certainly looks possible.
By the way that's landing with 3000kgs fuel which is 90 mins assuming VR not burnt.

Qantas’s Olivia Wirth on the wisdom of youth
PUBLISHED: 09 Oct 2014 21:20:42 | UPDATED: 09 Oct 2014 21:20:42
Joanne Gray
Youth and gender are issues that I’ve had to face over the last couple of years. When I was first appointed to the executive committee of Qantas, it was a clear issue that arose. I have thought a lot about how to deal with being a young woman in a senior role and the way that I managed this was seeking to bring in experience and wisdom and difference to my teams. Grey hair is very welcome in my teams. I see this as a way to counterbalance my youth. There are those who have much more experience and I can never make that up. So why not go and seek their views, listen to them, seek their counsel?
[Grounding the fleet and locking out the union in 2011] could be described as a public relations disaster, but it’s not of the making of the PR department. It was a decision that the business made. Was it good for our public relations? Absolutely not, it obviously caused a great deal of distress for a lot of people who were stuck as a result. But it was a decision that the CEO and board made at the time. We did our best, communicated openly with all stakeholders as best we could and you could argue if we didn’t operate the communication as we did, it may have actually been worse.
Our approach to social media absolutely changed [as a result of the engine explosion on QF32 in 2010]. The first we knew about it was a direct result of a picture that was picked up by Bloomberg that had been taken on an iPhone on an island called Batam in Indonesia, of a piece of engine or fuselage with a kangaroo on it. The media thought when they saw the picture on Twitter it was a tail.
We weren’t monitoring social media so we didn’t know about it. Bloomberg then picked up the picture and published a rumour that a Qantas airplane had crashed. That story ran, the share price dropped and that’s how we got onto the story. That was an unfortunate way of recognising the importance of social media.
Our initial approach was trying to control it. We had very strict processes around what [employees] can and cannot say. We recognised it was wrong. We’ve completely done a backflip. Instead, we look at how do we get our staff talking on our behalf in social media. And it’s all about having conversations, we monitor it, we participate in it and we encourage our employees to do so as well.
Olivia Wirth spoke about her leadership lessons at a Boss Emerging Leaders networking event in Sydney.
So the comms head acknowledges they were completely out of their depth.
Having realised their error they then implemented a program that "tried to control it." and the best bit.....
Which went completely pear shaped.
The piece says a lot more about the whole sorry state of employee relationships and the type of organisation these people supposedly lead.
So yes, Olivia will probably get the gig.

Is temp-related MLW an issue on that sector?
The thrust rating is changed winter/summer. With the higher thrust which I think they already all have for this summer it's not an issue.
