Request = it would be lovely to have thankyou

Require = I am not accepting anything less.

If i hear the words, 'request track shortening' ill generally reply with a 'will advise' If I hear the words 'require track shortening' I would generally ask if they required the airport to go on local standby...

Same thing happens at SY for the supers when on crossing modes, they have to provide warning beyond 250nm or something though so the sequence can still be flowed.
