Engine failure forces China flight to land: by Sharnie Kim

Engine failure forced an international flight to make an emergency landing at Cairns in far north Queensland overnight. The China Airlines flight from Sydney to Taipei encountered engine problems over Cape York and was diverted to Cairns. Police and fire crews were on standby but the Airbus A330 landed safely just after 3:00am (AEST). It is believed only one engine was working when the plane landed. The airline says the 218 passengers are still at the Cairns airport. It is trying to make travel arrangements with other carriers including Qantas, Jetstar and Cathay Pacific. China Airlines says it is investigating the incident.

...at least one elderly lady feared for her life as the plane plummeted onto the Cairns runway with only one engine remaining.
Local residents were 'thankful police were in attendance', according to the senior constable in an unrelated issue

What a disaster. Better increase the minimum ATPL requirements.

Don't be so quick to throw this off. Heard on the down low from a mate who is a Cairns engineer last night that it looks to be exactly this.

Once the story about the continual failure of these thronomisters gets out, it's going to be all over the headlines.

Why haven't they told the public about it? Such a recurring issue and it seems to be continually swept under the carpet.

Thank god it was only the thronomister again, imagine if it had been the PFM box. Oh the horrors that could have rained down on the terrified residents of Cairns.

QRH

Yeah, the QRH is pretty clear about this

ENGINE NOT WORKING

Thronomister (Not working engine)....................................check on

Scronungam valve re-set switch ........................................ Off, thenthen on

If no re-set occurs

Thronomister (Not working engine).................................... Off

Yeah, the QRH wasn't in English...... maybe it loses something in the translation from French to Chinese tho, but the Caution notes in the AFM re avoidance of large aquatic reptiles, schools and drunken wife-beaters is an interesting read.
