Boeing 787 world tour visits Brisbane

Well, just returned home after an hour-long tour of the B787 Dream Machine 003 here at Brisbane airport.
To say the least, I was quite impressed. It looks a rugged machine from the outside, especially when I was expecting a sort of 'plasticy' looking thing!
During the internal tour, I checked out the very comfy seats, the electronically tinted windows, the large overhead lockers and oodles of headroom in the cabin.
Unfortunately, the pilots were acting as tour guides in the cabin areas, so I was not permitted entry into the flight deck, just a look thru the door (after all, I might touch something!)....with such a largish area, I couldn't see to much in detail (very unfortunate!), looks very modern, (to much so for me, but hey, that's another story) and, thank god, those control columns are still there (though the control systems are digital!)
Went right thru the cabin, looked in the crew rest area in the overhead above the last few rows of seating, very cosy!
Spent some 45 minutes wandering around the airplane exterior, taking pics of everything.
All in all a very nice/informative morning spent amongst a very pleasant tour crew.

Yeah I too was impressed but like you was annoyed that we couldn't go into cockpit. "Only pilots allowed to enter." Upon informing that we are infact pilots the guard requested to see licences and medicals. Didn't realise that we were going to obtain an endorsement on the day as well!

J* only want 4 788s configured with 300 seats and no premium class. Not a rumour but fact from J* management. Like buying a 500sel Benz and using it as a taxi on a saturday night in downtown Bogan ville!

Dominic, It left Brisbane about 2 hours before you posted, sorry.

So was this a fully decked out 787, as one news story reported, or was it the one full of instruments?

Hi stevep64........
This airplane, 003, was sort of "seated out", by that I mean the forward half of the cabin was fitted with seating, and the rear half had seats fitted in some places, with the remainder just spare open space (with no holes in the floor where instrumentation consoles may have been).

I spoke with the Captain (Heather) for some time, originally a USAF Flight Engineer, she was very knowledgeable and was quite happy to explain some of the systems that I enquired about, would have loved to have a lot more time chatting!!

What an absolutely great combination, a captain that has a systems background, unfortunately a dying breed I think!

For me, one of the more unusual systems, because of the pure electric systems design, is the wing de-ice system...because of the electrical heating system for the leading edges, there is considered to be no load on the engines when it's in use, unlike the conventional pneumatic systems we are all used to.
So, there are two separate ice detector probes mounted just under the nose (exactly like the one fitted to the Lockheed P3 airplanes, for those in the know!) that automatically selects wing de-ice on and off (when the wing de-ice system is selected to auto), and indicates it's operation, or if it's not in 'auto' it will indicate that you need to consider switching it on.
With this and many other questions, she certainly knew her stuff!

watched it land on 34 at YMML at about 9:45 this morning - nice looking aeroplane - nice to see the flaps on the wing, rather than in assembly jigs where I usually see them!

What's with the Virgin Australia 'welcome aboard' 787 billboard? Have they ordered some? I can't find anything about it.

None ordered yet, but Virgin is in talks with Boeing and Airbus for future fleet post 2016/ 2017. Should be an announcement late this year or early next.

Must say it looks good in the VA colours.

Saw the bird outside the old Tenix hangar in Melb then an hr or two latter we where dragging it off taxing Nth along B whilst it was on C in Syd heading for Dom 6.
Would liked to have taken a vid of it whilst taxing next to it with my Mob Ph but I don't work for J*
Didn't look that big actually but those engines looked like a couple of cut down DC9 fuses strapped under it's wings !:-) It's screaming out for a stretch like the Dugong is.

In a year or so we'll not give it a 2nd glance I guess, just another airframe:-)
