NSW, Victoria call on PM to act on Qantas

THE Victorian and NSW premiers have joined forces in calling on Prime Minister Julia Gillard to intervene in the Qantas industrial dispute.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and his NSW counterpart Barry O'Farrell have written a joint letter to Ms Gillard outlining the impact of the ongoing dispute on both states.

What a surprise, that 2 of the 3 liberal states in Australia are calling for government intervention in an industrial dispute. Isn't that the job of Fair Work Australia to mediate and promote industrial conciliation ...........oh wait it is.

Until either side breaks the law or conducts itself in a manner that demonstrates an unwillingness to negotiate in good faith. The government needs to but the hell out. The state must remain an impartial observer.

Still remember what happened the last time a government got involved in an aviation dispute (a labor government that time as well).

Me thinks this is political point scoring that has more to do with the Liberal State governments trying to push the Labor Federal Government on Industrial reform, than any true concern for the Qantas Industrial issues being played out.

Don't you just love to see your tax dollars at work!

Let labor and management work out there differences as nature intended. Thru frank, open dialog undertaken between two parties arguing their opposing positions in good faith that compromise is achievable.

The Monster!

Poor poor Ministers, inconvenienced by all the QF turmoil, we don't want to see any politician inconvenienced and have to sit longer in business class or the chairmans lounge than possible do we, I mean 'how much trough can a snout bear'??
Hate to yell them this because I know they all live in their own silver spoon world but staff and the general citizen are also being being mightily disrupted and inconvenienced, but it is short term pain for long term gain, so the poor rich taxpayer paid representatives of our once great nation will have to grin and bear it along with the rest of us peasants. As#holes.

The last attempt by a Labor prime minister to intervene in a dispute between pilots and airline management did not work out very well for the country, the pilots, or even eventually the respective airlines (Australian, Ansett and IPEC do not exist today).

With regard to intervention by the current inept lot of socialists: be afraid. Be very, very afraid.

Juliar Dillard wouldn't be so dumb as to refer to pilots as 'bus drivers' like that other Labor fool of a prime minister did..would she??

Inconvenience?

Personally, I do not see what the hoohaa is about regarding QF having to apoogise for inconveniencing the travelling public. There has been considerable advance notice re disruptions to air travel so do as I did - voted with my feet.

As a FF, in view of the probable disruptions between now and Christmas, I have booked my twice per week travel with an alternate airline with no problems. I have also been able to change flights at the airport (on to an earlier flight) without the MASSIVE handling charge imposed by the red rat for ticket change.

Whilst I am not a union supporter nor have any association with the aviation industry (apart from being SLF), I am however in full support of the unions, particularly the LAMEs and the blokes up the pointy end. Best wishes

As I recall, the most costly industrial dispute in the country's history.

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid
Could not have said it better. Except maybe this:

'how much trough can a snout bear'??
I would direct that more toward Q management...

Any Government intervention will hang on the impact on the polls that such action may have.

If focus groups suggest that the swinging voter will be swayed towards a 'strong' intervention from the Government, then intervention we'll have.

Whilst many voters couldn't give a rats backside about the current dispute, there's little (for the moment) to prompt Julia to get involved - especially on the TWU side of the equation.

People are not as thick as AJ & OW think. General consensus is Joyce is getting paid big bucks to manage Qantas, and he should work this out. It is his responsibility. Crying to the government to intervene is just what a bully does when he gets a fat lip from someonrunu
standing up for themselves.

I am with Captain Dart. Keep Juliar and her trough snouting mates well clear. She will only bend over and back that wide arse of hers up to the Qantas freeby counter and make sure she and her mates get their fill.

She has proven again and again that Australian jobs mean nothing to her.

If we lose this and overseas outsourcing of skilled proffesionals is deemed acceptable what will Australia look like in ten or twenty years from now.

Is Qantas Relevant?

Qantas' share of international traffic is now so small is it still relevant?
The international network is comparatively small and hardly services rthe needs of the J/C traveller

Denabol, good work with the link.

Mr Sandliands, another truthfully painted piece of writing, well done. Political spin and commentary has no place in this dispute, the government are using that old nugget 'intervention may be required if the economy is being hurt', what a crock of ****e. This half arsed government, and Johnny Eyebrowes before it, have damaged enough businesses, individuals and sectors themselves already, so please dear politicians, save your sh#t for where it belongs - down the toilet.
As for the Premiers in mention, how about you go and do something productive like minimise your wasting of OUR taxpayer money on trivial ****e, fix the infrastructure, fix the fu#king state economy, you know things like that, rather than worrying about your disrupted business class flights and the risk that the Chairmans Lounge may become overcrowded if there are delays.
