Leadership Challenges - Lessons Learnt

Leadership Fundamentals
All leaders must accept the human resource bottom line-that they are responsible-full stop-for both the good and bad which occurs within their organisation.
Genuine leadership is arguably the supreme professional test of all CEOs, managers and supervisors-in every organisation.
In my experience, leaders, who exercise their authority in a humane and compassionate way, are, in the main, the most successful over the long term. But even more important is the positive and sustaining effects that such a style has on those who are led. Simply put, because people will want to work for you they will optimise their productivity accordingly. The opposite is true of those organisations whose work-place culture revolves around the dual motivations of greed and fear.

Quite some while back, a trusted non-Qantas source relayed to me a comment Cosgrove made privately in his presence about QF morale. We both agreed he was for some reason completely detached from reality.

I guess when you control the flow of information, you can make the Board members think whatever the heck you like. I mean, it's not like they do "Undercover Boss" or anything.

A bloke who has made his name from defending the country and leading high calibre men to fight for the moral ground and to defend the liberties of those being trodden upon.

A bloke who is a Qantas director, a company who is outsourcing and off-shoring as fast it can yet still calling itself Australian. A director of a company who abandons a worker who simply says they wont go above and beyond for it and wont extend a tour of duty but is willing to work what he was rostered for.

Can it be the same man????

If it is, I believe he should hang his head in shame and call himself a fraud....

There is no point calling out the only person on the board who has any moral integrity.

He is surrounded by MBA bankers who are all of the same mindset of anything is fair game in the search for profits. They can't do wrong.

Even if the yield today is less then it was 10 years ago.

Even though the profit is less then it was 10 years ago when Qantas had many more employees and less aircraft and carried 10 million passengers less per year.

He is but 1 vote surrounded by anti union, anti expensive Australia workers. The latest appointment to the board former Galaxy Fund CEO Corinne Namblard just proves that point. She made her name by shuffling money around to make commisions, not by creating value by making a product or providing a service.

She is just a leech going along for the ride in the credit driven bubble. She is the smartest person in the room and she's just joined a board full of the smartest people in the room.

Peter Cosgrove is out of his league here, he made a career on being a soldier and an intermediary between the government and the soldiers, not by shuffling numbers around to meet his KPI for the month to secure that big juicy bonus.

Just 1 voice. Nice easy pay cheque too, just turn up to a few meetings and nod.
