Chuck in a few of these and I promise not to lecture anybody on anything ...
Dunno if it's indicative of the average pax but I've never minded the pay for food/drink concept.
Back in the day, Freedom Air offered a LCC non-catered fare to Auckland in competition with a catered Air New Zealand fare on a similar aircraft. It was (on average) $50 dearer than Freedom and you got... a meat pie. The caterers used to call it the fifty buck pie. On the average domestic leg you don't need feeding anyway, and I'd rather pay for a drink service than have a theoretical free drinks service that never actually appears. I can also provide my own newspaper without sticky marks and badly completed crossword.
From personal experience Air India actually provide a better domestic full service product than Qantas. I think the Qantas domestic product has gotten very comfortable in post Ansett times and it's good to see a bit of competition. Not everyone wants the $25 BYO beanbag product the LCCs are providing.
Overnight Virgin Australia replaced its five fare domestic structure with three fares, two of which include meals.

In a canny move to tempt Qantas' most coveted customers, Virgin Australia will provide Qantas Frequent Flyer gold and platinum members with access to its new Melbourne lounge (see our extensive photo-gallery here) as well as Sydney's premium lounge entry under a limited-time 'status recognition' deal.

Anyone thinking they will charge for check in service at the airport.... like Jetstar are about to.
I truly hope Virgin get it right so far the reviews for their lounge have been fantastic. God how I miss the full service of TAA...
Yes Worrels, may I just have one of those

And that is where they will stay, within Australia. More to come out of Perth to MEL/BNE, and the east coast run.
If one reads the annual report one will see his salary is heavily based on both company profit and share price. To place them into Asia would incur lots of money and hench effect the share price. The company is going to show a loss FY10/11. It will not happen on his watch!
