"Only quick thinking and the skill of Qantas pilots averted what may have been a serious accident at Perth Airport on Wednesday when an Airbus A330 with 180 passengers aboard veered to the left just as it was about to lift off.

A problem with the rudder is believed to have been the cause of the aborted take-off of the two-year old A330-203. The A330 was doing 180km/h, just seconds from reaching its 220km/h take-off speed on Runway Three when it veered to the left, forcing the crew to abort the take-off and apply maximum braking."

But, please don't for one minute think that ONLY QF drivers were capable of these recoveries. Any airline with a robust CAR 217 operation would have had the same outcomes.

This is true but it just so happens that QF crew have demonstrated over the last six months that people up the front are the difference between life and death when things go wrong.

Wasn't long ago that the CEO of Ryanair called for EFFOs to be replaced with flight attendants. He's a moron we all know that but its his attitude that is starting to infiltrate our industry at all levels.

So true, and there in lies the problem, training and checking standards in general could hardly be considered robust in any company I have worked for.

Have a look at all the incidents that QF have had over the past 5 years and think about that statment. Don't forget that there was also a fatal accident in Europe in a 737 which was a non eventful landing when QF pilots had the same problem.

I'm not suggest that only QF drivers could have handled them however the QF training and experience of the pilots is worth noting. As mentioned in the first post it is more about respect than anything else.

It's not that others couldn't or can't do it... it's just that Qantas boys and girls have been performing under the spotlight consistantly over the last few years. With many more incidents than we'd like to see, they've all been handled very professionally. Well done guys.

Maybe an Air France Airbus 330 Crash Corelation

Uncommanded high value rudder deflection at cruise speed would most likely result in a rudder and/or vertical stabiliser separation........AF447 and perhaps Afriqiyah771 on short finals into Tripoli (it cartwheeled)......is fly-by-wire failsafe ?

Could we also note the training and experience of KA/CX/BA/UA/LH etc crew who have probably had similar RA failures in their extensive histories and NOT CRASHED just like QF.
