Strategic is up and away on the Solomons Route

Spotted this article in the Solomon Star today and particularly enjoyed the following sentence:

"A tray filled with food is something one would not want to resist."

Pure gold

A new service with comfort: Solomon Airlines brings Airbus to here Tuesday, 04 August 2009 SOLOMON Airlines yesterday launched its newly introduced Airbus service with its bigger Airbus A330-300.

The launching went ahead despite the smaller airbus A320-200 meant for the service is still in France.

The airbus will arrive sometimes this week.

However to ensure the service resume as planned Solomon Airlines and Strategic Aviation used the A330-300 on the maiden flight into Honiara from Brisbane.

The partnership came into reality after National Carrier Solomon Airlines signed an agreement with Strategic Aviation of Australia in May.

The airbus A330-300 can carry about 287 passengers compared to the A320-200 which can take only 156 passengers.

Yesterday around 200 passengers made it onto the maiden flight.

Under the deal, Strategic Aviation provides an airbus to Solomon Airlines to service the Brisbane-Honiara-Brisbane lucrative route.

Solomon Airlines made its mark with the arrival of an Airbus A330-200 at the Honiara International Airport.

It’s the second time such an airbus, which has carrying capacity of 280 passengers, to land at the Honiara International Airport.

Last December a similar airbus was chartered by the Ministry of Education to transport about 280 students studying at various institution in Fiji back to Honiara for their end year vacation.

Close to 200 passengers made the inaugral flight from Brisbane into Honiara with much excitement.

While a number of the passengers are locals most of the passengers are foreigners who are mainly tourists or those on business trips.

As an introduction, a special airfare of SBD$320 was offered.

Some of the passengers will return tomorrow or Friday.

The special runs for two weeks.

From Honiara a good number of passengers also made the return flight back to Brisbane yesterday.

The delay in the arrival of the A320 had been attributed to some technical issues with the French Civil Aviation department regarding the registration of the aircraft and the Maintenance approvals required.

"The delays were beyond our control and this was partly to do with the lack of resources available within the Civil Aviation department in France,” Gus Kraus of Solomon Airlines said.

“This in turn delayed the aircraft from positioning to Brisbane to operate our services,” he said.
The aircraft A320 is expected to be released to fly to Brisbane sometime this week and will be ready for Solomon Airlines services by the following Monday 10th August.

The new service also means new schedule which is three times a week on Monday, Wednesdays, and Friday.

The Airbus A330 will be operating the services on Friday whilst the Wednesday flight will be operated by another operator which has been put into place by Strategic Airlines to support its contractual obligations to Solomon Airlines.

Solomon Airlines stressed that it’s business as usual and all plans for next week are in place for the operation to be maintained by Strategic Airlines whilst awaiting delivery of its own Airbus A320.

The bigger aircraft will give Solomon Ailrines the added capacity to meet the nation's growing tourism around 18% annually.

Solomon Airlines Chairman Bill Tyson prior to the launch of the service said this is part of securing longer term arrangement to operate the international services which the capacity for growth.

Strategic airline provides services to the Australian Defence Force and operates regular charter flights for other government and corporate customers within Australiasia with its Australian-based airbus A330-300.

Solomon Airlines move into striking the deal with Strategic Aviation due to a number of poor schedules provided by Our Airline during prime times and demanding times.

Once the A320 arrives, the aircraft will be operated by the Strategic pilots and the cabin exclusively manned by Solomon Airlines flight attendants.

I was fortunate to be amongst others to be traveling in the business class and the services on board was excellent.

You have a choice of drinks and hot meals to choice from. A tray filled with food is something one would not want to resist.

After a hot meal, you can relax on the seats, which is much wider and also provides better space to lean, rest your leg and take a nap.

And it’s not only that but there’s entertainment provided in music and video shows.

One of the passengers on the maiden flight George Herming applauded the new service, saying it will boost travelling for the public out of the country as well as help in the trading activities.

He said it’s something Solomon Islanders should be proud to have such services into the country.

The new service will also see a cut in flight time by about 20 minutes from the usual three hours fifteen minutes.

Prior to making its landing the airbus circled above Honiara as part of its launch here.

Hundreds of people turned up at the international airport to witness the huge jet slowly making its way to the airport.

The size of the airbus nearly outsizes the international terminal tarmac.

Airlines officials had to find a better ladder to reach the height of the jet.

Mr Kraus was at the door to greet the passengers disembarking from the aircraft.

He was smiling and expressed satisfaction over the launch of the new service.

Fark - the egoes in this business just get bigger in proportion to the size of the aircraft. Or is it the other way round?

6 Month's maybe rather generous. Solomons and Aviation have rarely made any sense let alone money. Yet "operators" continue to put their hand in the fire.

Mmmmmh, interesting!!! Are we really seeing SAW in the making or is Strategic really the exciting, profesional new airline that they claim??? I'm thinking perhaps Ozjet 4 is more appropriate under the circumstances. I give it 6 months max

Amazing how management of failed companies (in this case, Ozjet Marks 1, 2 & 3) find their way into plum jobs while the workers are left to flounder.

Maybe with all the practice they have had, they might be able to manage a little better this time.

So what happens to the 5 fabulous OJ girls that got taken on to work the HIR route??? Given that the statement in the first post of this thread clearly states the agreement between Solomons and strategic, that the operation will be run using Strategic tech crew and exclusively Solomon cabin crew.

Hi all

Anyone whether they be current or former cabin crew with strategic like to give out some upto date information on them please???

- What they like to work for

- Current conditions

- throughs on whether you think they will last (can australia sustain
another large carrier

- As they are going to be an Oz airline, do they have their AOC
licence

I had an interview with them many years ago it was a phone interview and was offered a position, but declined it because of the negativity behind them at the time. Would love to hear what current crew think of them as well as former - great way to t a perspective

Amazing how clowns like you state the obvious. Of course they make it they are not fools. Maybe all the workers should become management.
