He'll be back, they always are

Aviation has a way of sucking you back in without any logic regardless of the monetary implications.

For the good old day's when the Tulla freight apron would have the Ipec DC-9, Ansett B727 readymix, TNT BAE-146, Pelairs Westwind's going to Darwin, Perth and Brisbane, a Conquest or two, Australian Air Charters(Ausair) PA-31's, Airlines of Tasmania's Heron or PA-31, Avcentre's Aerostars, the mob from Adelaide with the 402c's, Sunstate(Mildura) Shorts 360 and a few other ringins if needed.

The other thing these days is that airlines are running a lot more capacity overnight, so more capacity for freight uplift to Perth, Darwin, Brisbane and Cairns. I know a couple of freight forwarders that send a lot of air freight with Jetstar instead of chartering aircraft. A Westwind would carry 2000kg's on the centre run, easily transferred onto VB or JQ.

Whatever happened to big Les and the TNT caravan?

A lot of guys got some good jet experience and first jet job in the mighty Westwind. Back in the late 80's early 90's an interview with Pelair, meant you had to be recommended by somebody within the company.

Rex cuts 24 jobs in freight restructureApril 28, 2009 - 6:29PM
Airline Regional Express Holdings Ltd (Rex) will cull 24 pilots and ground staff after a restructure of its freight business due to the decline in freight volumes.

Managing Director Jim Davis said on Tuesday a dramatic drop in overnight freight volumes has forced it to restructure its freight business.

"Sadly, this has resulted in unavoidable redundancies amongst the pilots and for some ground staff," Mr Davis said in a statement.

Rex said it has commenced phasing out its small Metro 3 freighter aircraft and has announced to staff that in total 20 pilots and four ground staff will no longer be required.

The freight services remaining will now be operated by Saab 340 aircraft, which can carry freight more efficiently and economically than the smaller Metro 3s.

Three Saab 340 freighters have already been placed in service, it said.

The last Metro 3 freight run will operate on May 29.

Rex said it has not announced any retrenchment of pilots for its regular passenger operations, but cannot rule out such a possibility in the next six months if the current deterioration in the industry continues.

Looking for a mate?

Hi all,

Not good to hear about the job situation...I hope all those affected find a new employer soon and move on with their career!!

On the subject of Pel Air, a mate of mine was a Metro driver there for several years...based in BNE last I knew...Kurt Boyd. Anyone know his whereabouts? PM me with a contact if you could, mates from many years past, but I have lost contact over recent years...would be great to catch up again.

Cheers,
Heavy

Very Sad

Great bunch of guys some with many years of night freight experience. I had great time at Pel Air late 90's.

18-Wheeler i hear drinks at Breaky Creek Sunday? are you and SL going to be there?

Has JD (also ex PELAIR) offered jobs at REX?

I wasn't planning to ...

Reckon we should twist Pelair Brissie's arm and get them to throw a big BBQ lunch for us at the end of next month. BYOG but they get Shane the engineer to use his oxy torch to weld us up some steaks and get some Woollies salad.

Unfortunately vigi-one, REX are about 30-40 pilots overstocked themselves. With 50 Cadets yet to come through, and apparently with them still interviewing for the scheme, it doesn't take a calculator to see some bumpy times ahead!

Possible future redundancies on seniority? Or some sort of merit basis??? I dont put it past them...
Maybe its time for Rex pilots to ditch the old AFAP and look at a more productive partner....maybe the TWU???? As you have said earlier Krusty let the baby have its bottle...for now, because the tide will turn and the last person will have to turn the light off on the way out when the big boys(Q, J*,Tiger) decide s**t, no more eco-crisis, better fire up the HR department again guys and gals. For every downturn there's and upturn....its basic high school consumer ed...

You're certainly right about REX being caught out when things pick up again Cheechos! These characters will not allow themselves the option of competeing for labour. They were damn lucky to get away with it last time. Next time however may be a different story. Their solution of course was as short sighted as their grasp of the value of their "experienced" pilots.

As far as redundancies at REX are concerned, unless there is a quick and dramatic economic turnaround, then I'm willing to bet at least 30 over the next 6 months! It isn't rocket science, as as I mentioned in my previous post. Redundancies, if they occur, will happen in reverse order of seniority you can count on that! Management would dearly love to have it otherwise, but I'm afraid that unlike the boys at the GA operation across the floor, REX pilots at least have a defined position in this regard. Thanks in no small measure to the AFAP.

Now back on topic, and speaking of Pelair. There appears to be some mixed messages floating around with regards to the forthcoming redundancies. I received a PM today from someone whom I believe to be a senior Pelair pilot. He advised me that the redundancies will be on Strict seniority, ie: Date of joining. He informed me further that the exceptions are casual pilots (The ex Macair guys) and Check and Trainers ie: Management pilots. As such I posted this information.

Sometime later I recieved another PM, reportedly from a senior Metro pilot saying that the redundancies were of a fleet nature and that some very junior and new SF340 trainees were staying, but more senior metro drivers were to be given the boot!

In light of these apparent contradictions, I decided to delete the post. Now at the end of the day, if the pelair pilot group do not have adequate seniority protection, well that's something that probably should have been sorted long ago. If pelair management are able to legally retrench outside of seniority then sadly that's the way it is.

In future I'll take PM's with a grain of salt I think.

Does anyone here know where the truth really lies?

I can tell you for a fact he's wrong. Some 'senior' guys are still getting the flick over junior ones.
*Edit - I should qualify that - No-one has actually been given notice as such yet, but it isn't far away.

I guess we shouldn't always believe what we read 18-Wheeler.

A question to you and the forum though. Do the pilots at Pelair have any sort of seniority provisions in their industrial agreement. My instincts tell me no, but you might be able to clarify?

I honestly don't know, but it's certainly a consideration.
For example, the pilot that's been in the company the logest, has been kept on in Melbourne as a travelling Trainer & sim instructor. I was really chuffed to see that as he's a great bloke and asset to the company.
