A GIANT US Airforce bomber was forced to make an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport last night after developing problems with its landing gear.
Why not Avalon? PS not permit, or better overnight pubs in MEL?

B1 in YMML
Sat in the Kilo run up bay all day coned off to all and sundry, easy viewing from QF maint base though if that way inclined, was moved (towed) down to Tenix (Whiskey 3) around 1700 local and from there on I don't know as it is now beer o'clock.

USAF pilot on news saying it went to Tulla because Avalon was shut.
He also went on to say that a blown tyre wasn't really news worthy. Which is what people have been saying on here for years.

Bloggsy, hardly the same size.
B1B span 139 ft
739 span 112 ft
B1B length 147 ft
739 length 138 ft (Not too much shorter though)
BUT
B1B MTOW 216,365 KG
739 85250KG
So not really comparable

Same aircraft (type) came through on his way to Av maybe 2 shows ago, news got around that he was gonna do a touch-n-go on 16 so about 20-25 off duty ATC's/OS pop out to have a look. Levels off at 500', all pretty sedate ("is that it?" says I), then at the 27 intersection lights both pairs of burners and pitches about 85° nose up and is off. Impressive (and loud). Definitely more impressive than a 739...

I would suggest that the reason that the pilot chose Tulla over Avalon was fourfold.
1. ARFF services are significantly greater
2. The better chance of getting repaired ASAP
3. 24 hr security
4. Longer runway
