Qantas A380s to Honour Our Aviation Pioneers
Sydney, 16 November 2008Qantas today announced the names of its fleet of 20 A380 aircraft, honouring pioneers of Australian aviation.
Qantas Chief Executive Officer Designate, Mr Alan Joyce said that today - the airline's 88th birthday - was a fitting date to honour men and women who had contributed to the development of aviation in Australia.
"I am delighted that some of our greatest aviation trail blazers and their families have agreed to allow Qantas to name our A380 fleet in their honour," he said. "Today, we are bringing aviation's past together with its future."
"We have been overwhelmed with the support from the public since we announced the A380 naming program and all of the names that people have suggested have been very worthy.
"We have taken some of those suggestions, and also consulted aviation experts, to ensure we chose people who have not only made a great difference to flying in this country, but who represent the courage, tenacity and determination of the real spirit of Australia.
"Among them are Qantas' founders Fergus McMaster, Paul McGinness and Hudson Fysh, who gathered at the Gresham Hotel in Brisbane and signed the formal papers to establish Qantas 88 years ago.
"Others include engineers, inventors, navigators and business leaders - but all are pioneers, and all are very deserving."

I said it the last time this was up & I'll say it again, it will be nice to see the Ansett name in the sky again & kudos to Qantas for acknowledging his role in the early days of this industry.

Sir Reg, by any standard was a true pioneer of aviation in this country. His is one of the more deserving names on that list and I am glad to see his memory honoured by Qantas.
Qantas never competed directly with Sir Reg... not that that would make any difference to his suitability for the honour. The spivs that took AN down the gurgler took over from him long before AN began competing directly with Qantas.

A little sadly, it's perhaps some indication of how far in the past the Ansett name now is in Oa aviation that Qantas feel safe to use it. All power to them for doing so - it will generate some comment among the media and the general public, much if not most of it, I suspect, very favourable to Qantas. Truth be told, they could use a bit of good publicity after the last few months.
Has Lawrence Wackett's name made it onto the side of a QF machine yet and if not, why not? Incredible man.

Great to see Scotty Allan on the list. He was the primary reason Qantas did not purchase the Comet despite political pressure to do so.
I also believe the Sir Lawence would be a very worthy contender.

I recall a colleague suggesting that when one of QF's 330's was being delivered around ANZAC Day it be named "Villers-Bretonneux ", the scene of a famous battle in WW1 where the AIF successfully defended this French town.
He included a brief history with his submission, highlighting a few points of interest like,
The townspeople have never forgotten this, they fly the Australian Flag every day and sing the Australian National Anthem at all official functions and above every blackboard at every school is the inscription "N'oublions jamais l'Australie" (Let us never forget Australia).
He added that the (free) publicity showered upon Australia and Qantas would be priceless.
The reply he received went along the lines of, "matey, you fly the aircraft and we'll run the business.
