And yet.....since many of you folks are younger pilots thinking about jobs in the future....

On Dixon's watch the biggest order for wide-bodied next generation jets (787) in history was placed and...

One of the biggest ever single orders for the 737NG and...

One of the biggest ever single orders for the A320/21....

If all that doesn't make you happy there'll still be plenty of jobs for you to be sad in.
I am a little confused - just because there might be lots of new shiney planes coming - are the conditions worth working for? ( and no its not do I think it is worth it - are the people who are candidates for the position think it is worth it?)

Just ask the farmers - plenty of fruit trees to pick. But no one willing to pick them because the conditions are seen as too poor for too much hard work. - social perception of the conditions and position.
But you say there is a difference between picking fruit and flying planes?
Ask the younger generation coming through - you just might find the attitudes of the younger generation quite enlightening.
Politicians, airline executives and even pilots have been talking down the industry for years - be it for their own agendas - keeping costs down to the minimum they have to pay to get the job done or even down to protecting their seniority and conditions and just simply try to advance their own relative position within the industry etc.

Ahhh but the jets are shiney and new!!!! And lots of them.

I have kind of found that telling the younger generation what they will like does not cut it. They will do what they like (and with a very informed decision making process too!!) - and if the conditions are not to their liking - when a better position becomes available - they vote with their feet. Competition and supply and demand at its best. The younger generation is very savy, street smart and apace with technology.

But probably best not to listen to me - but listen the younger ones. Hear their thoughts and expressions, their fears and anxieties and their needs in life. Listen to them with respect and you may understand them more....The 20 somethings are the future of this industry - what would you like to leave them with? What would they like to be left with?

I do not hold anything against them - I kind of like their refreshing attitude sometimes. Simply a product of their environment. Their work/life choices are different from ours. Just because the jets are new and there are lots of them does not mean that if the positions are filled that they will remain filled.

Haha Generation Y. Never has there been a lazier more self serving, self absorbed arrogant bunch of know alls. An absolute disgrace I don't even see the worth in fixing up the environment for them. They can bloody do it themselves. They will choose he easiest cheapest path forward. Whch is sit on their asses until it comess to them.

Go and have a chat with some GA operators . They will tell you some good stories concerning prospective pilots. Their attitude, conduct and this attitude the world owes them a big favour. See the quality of individual and pilot that is coming through at the moment. Crikey try having a beer with one.

Like I could give a damn about leaving the industry in a certain condition for them. Hell look afteryourself cause they won't be looking out for you. If you like your conditions, salary etc then to hell with those who don't.
