Post Merged: Ozjet aborts trans-Tasman plan due takeover bid!?

Ozjet leaves NZ passengers in lurch
Mar 27, 2008 6:37 PM
There are fears that at least 1,000 New Zealand travellers are being left in the lurch after a cut-price Australian airline abandoned its plan to fly in and out of Palmerston North.

The airline is not talking but destinations were taken off Ozjet's website throughout the day on Thursday and its Australian call centre says flights from the city have been canned.

In Palmerston North, the Ozjet hoardings are up but flights are not taking off.
Airport worker Kathy Young is job-hunting. Another 12 employees at the duty free shop were laid off on Thursday because of the bombshell news that Ozjet will not be using the airport.
"There was no wind of this happening at all," says Young.
"We did training yesterday for going out onto the tarmac and that was just yesterday morning with an Ozjet engineer."
Ozjet 737s were due to head out of Palmerston North up to six times a week, heading to Brisbane and Sydney.
Each plane can carry just over 100 people and there were to be matching return flights.
Six months ago when freedom air cancelled it's service oz-jet seemed this airport's saviour
"There's another airline that's bought the company. That's what we're being told they don't have an interest in wanting to fly to New Zealand. So it seems it's a large corporate strategic issue," says Jono Naylor, Palmerston North mayor.
Earlier on Thursday, Ozjet's website still showed Palmerston North on its flight schedule. Now it's only showing a service from Perth to Derby in Western Australia and the company's New Zealand phone number has been disconnected.
The company's Melbourne headquarters confirmed to ONE News that the Palmerston North service has been cancelled and referred further inquiries to its public relations man, but he did not return calls.
In Palmerston North they're counting the cost.

"It means the business disappears because they were the only international flights out of here," says Gordon Edwards, duty free store owner.
A few souvenirs and advertising are all that's left right now of Palmerston North's international airport status.

Sad to see Palmy lose it's 'international' status! 'Our Airline' buying Ozjet an interesting thought as well....

OzJet to be taken over by Our Airline/Nauru Air Corporation?

Haven't heard this one before, but it has hit the news in NZ thanks to the associated canning of the Palmerston North service. Seems like a bit of an odd deal to me...

27 March, 2008
OzJet announces with regret that due to recent merger talks which are nearing completion it is unable at this time to commence operations as envisaged on the 31st March 2008.

OzJet's CEO Willie O'Neill says " The potential for Trans Tasman services and the opportunities that the Manawatu connection presented was first class and it regrettable that we can not move forward at this time ".

OzJet has worked closely with a number of key stakeholders in New Zealand including the Palmerston North International Airport company, Destination Manawatu and Palmerston North City Council and a number of other organisations. Planning for the new services was well advanced and there will be disappointment with this sudden change of plan which has been driven by events beyond the control of any one party.

All Passengers booked on OzJet services to and from Palmerston North will be fully refunded. OzJet regrets the disruption to these customers and the travel community in New Zealand that has supported their new service.
I wonder how this will affect the crew (presumably not particularly large bodies) at both airlines?

I doubt it'd be Air Nauru...probably another asian carrier like the LionAir/SkyAirWorld deal.

I can't see why Air Nauru would want OzJet.

Would agree with you IAW.

Seems odd that an airline just a short time ago that had its aircraft forfeited is now in a position to purchase a 732 operation??

Still this is aviation and stranger bed buddies have got together!

Had there been any word on what their loads were looking like? Enough for NZ to have another look, or as bad as what NZ had said all along?

Freedom Air

I've flown into and out of Palmerston North twice on Freedom Air and all flights were full.

Figures, I know of some other Aus company looking at 737's. Its easier to purchase an airline like Ozjet who have got the 737 AOC / contracts and financially stable

Skystar320, which already existing Australian airline would want a two bit 732 charter operation?

You'd be suprised.

Its far better / economical / may be cheaper to purchase a operation i.e 732 AOC as it would be easier to upgrade to 7334/5 aircraft

Instead of submitting to get on AOC to operate 737 aircraft, bingo you already have an operation in Australia with some good contracts

Everything's in place!

Skystar your not far off, and I dont think it is a case of Ozjet wanting Our airline but Ozjet needing the help of Our Airline.

Quite opposite.

The carrier doesnt have an 737 AOC, but is looking favourable at Ozjet as they already ahave 737 and it makes far more economical sense

Doubtful is has anything to do with Our Airline

Think you will find Stoddart has had enough of the losses with Ozjet, and Our Airline is interested in servicing some of their contracts such as the Solomons and Norfolk, perhaps even with the Ozjet aircraft. Not a done deal as yet by any stretch.

I guess you could have said the same thing a few years about a two bit B1900 company that morphed into something quite a lot bigger.

SKY STAR , so WHO??????

So if not OUR AIRLINE, and SAW is stretched with their limited until now contract success, then that only leaves the only other operation (??) that has ETOPS approval to the destribed destinations, and has tried and tested the routes before. In this fast changing industry of airlines going broke, or into something better, who knows. Best of luck to all. It can only benefit all of us.

And on the topic of benefitting all of us, hows Air Asia X's statement in the Aust bout being 10x the size by 2010. Crikey !!!
