Hey FoxtrotAlpha18

thanks for the dictionary definintion, would never have guessed that is what reportedly meant!!!

Quess my point is that so far it is "ri-pawr-tid-lee'D" (sp?) that OA, Alliance, APNG, TOLL, NFI, VB, VA, PB. AirPac and just about every other Australian and Pacific Aviation orientated company is ri-pawr-tid-lee going to buy Ozjet.

Do you know something more factual than ri-pawr-tid-lee, if you do let us in on the secret.

So I guess the charters that that Mr Wilson organised with Norfolk Island Air to go to NZHN for the Aussie V8's are off as well since they were using the Ozjet 73's.

There was a a rush of publicity a while back but nothing heard since.

Oh well, I guess if the earlier reports are true that magician Ewan is off to Ryan Air he will be too busy to worry about these charters anyway.

Looks like I'll have to for go the excitement and bright lights of Norfolk and buy a pass to the boring V8's.

Wilson to join ON?

Further rumours have it that Ewan Wilson (promoted by Norfolk's Minister for Self Interest) will slot into a senior position within the Nauru Air Corporation infrastructure. This is in return for (the Minister's) agreement & signature for ON to replace OzJet as Norfolk's prime operator. Where does John Brown sit with all this?

Kiwi days, a good idea at the time

A mate flew with ON back in the 'Kiwi' days. They never had a CRS until about a month before they went belly-up. All they had was an accounting package that sort of added seats to a data-base. That operation was a total mess, but he knew more than all the others in the industry. Even made his wife their Ops Manager & she knew less about aviation that the airport cleaner.
Whatever his (lack of) skills were, he started something in the region. Just a pity he didn't have any clues apart from his time as a cabin crew member with the RNZAF & some 10 hours in a C150! Even when he was flying the PAC DC4F as a F/O out of BNE he was a disaster.
Maybe ON will teach him something interesting; but he should be bringing something positive to the table (apart from a very good contract).

Our Airline/Air Nauru

Unless "Our Airline" has gazumped RyanAir, there is some certainty here on Norfolk Island that Wilson is off to Ireland. One thing is certain, and that is that he has resigned.
Latest word here is that the Norfolk Air branded 737-200 is off to Our Airline and two other Ozjet 737's have been sold to Europe as Stoddart believes that the "C" check that is due for both, will cost more than the planes are worth.

Light at the end of the tunnel

The Island can look forward to a brighter tourism future at last. Will place some champers on ice to have when he finally departs your shores. Well done & welcome to Ireland.

Pacific Magazine report

Nauru Rekindles Air Links With Norfolk Island
Thursday: April 10, 2008

(Media release)

Nauru’s Our Airline (formerly Air Nauru) is set to make a welcome return to the Norfolk Island route, following negotiations which were finalized this week to provide air services for Norfolk Air.

The preparation of contracts between the two airlines and their respective governments are in the final stages and are expected to be signed over the next week.

Under the arrangement, Our Airline will acquire an additional Boeing 737-300 series aircraft which will eventually replace Norfolk Air’s current 737-200, thus providing approximately 25 percent greater seating capacity and up to 50 percent additional freight carrying capability.

The additional 737-300, to be based on Norfolk Island, is expected to be in service by October and will bear Norfolk Air’s livery. In the interim, services will be operated using the Norfolk Air’s existing aircraft, with interim services expected to start before the end of this month (April).

Norfolk Island’s Minister for Finance, Neville Christian, said the five-year contractual arrangement would bring a host of benefits to both parties.

“The newer generation aircraft will provide more reliable services with onboard state-of-the-art navigational equipment to reduce the likelihood of diversions in poor weather.

“The additional seating and freight capacity, combined with lower fuel burn and extended over-water operational capability means the aircraft will be able to fly the Norfolk to Melbourne route with unrestricted payload.

“This is great news for traveling Norfolk Islanders and tourists coming into Norfolk,” Mr. Christian said.

Nauru’s Minister for Transport, Sprent Dabwido said the contractual agreement amounted to a resumption of the close relationship Nauru had held for many years under its previous airline, Air Nauru.

“Today, we are in a much better position to provide a completely reliable service with effective flight frequencies rightly expected by the people and the government of Norfolk Island.

“As a joint operation with Norfolk Air, we will have the combined strength to spread our wings, so to speak, with the linking of a wider network and a rapidly growing number of destinations, including Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Coolangatta and Brisbane along with our established routes in the Pacific,” Mr Dabwido said.

The Norfolk Air agreement is the latest in a series of new opportunities for Our Airline, which recently signed an agreement with the Marshall Islands to provide air services between Majuro and Fiji on behalf of Air Marshall Islands.

Special Advisor to the government of Nauru, Manish Sundarjee of Melbourne-based Kidman’s Partners, who helped consummate the Norfolk contract with Norfolk Air CEO, Ewan Wilson, said the agreement was consistent with Our Airline’s projected growth plan.

“It will strengthen Our Airline’s position on key routes in the smaller regions of the Pacific, which have been under-serviced for far too long.

“Our Airline has a number of other exciting projects on the table designed to fill these voids and provide much-needed services to niche destinations in the Pacific” Mr Sundarjee said.

Norfolk Air CEO, Ewan Wilson said it was an exciting time for Norfolk Islanders and the island-based airline.

“The Our Airline – Norfolk Air contract will see a number of additional employment opportunities for Norfolk Islanders.

“Apart from our front-end ground staff, we will also be employing around ten new cabin crew members to accommodate the new services,” Mr Wilson said.

Is it just me or does ON constantly attract bad/corrupt management run on self interest?
Sal-e, are you suggesting the current OA management aren't doing a good job but, rather, have self interests at heart? You couldn't be further from the truth and are a total dunce if you do hold that view.

You seem to have been associated with the former Air Nuaru so you should be well aware that the troubles that airline had were home grown - corrupt politicians, commandeering of the airline's funds, poor handling of the aircraft lease payments, political interference etc etc - mostly events out of the hands of the management. Look a little closer to home for the reasons behind some of their problems, don't blame the management, I suggest. To answer your question - it is plainly you!

Ivan, you have it so wrong. Our near neighbours (Nauru) have attracted the inept of the aviation industry of late, and ON has been subject to gross mis-management for years. Reporting inaccuracies and huge ego's at the top of the airline structure are to blame.
How can one GM claim excellent profits when they never paid lease fees for the aircraft (the lost -400). This is in the same category as President deRobert claiming a profit when they had a loss of $15m in lieu of the budgeted $29m loss (Forum, about '84).
NPC regularly paid engineering fees (when QF would not release the aircraft) and all their insurance charges for many years (under Pres. Laggy Harris?).
It is well known that there still pilots (long gone) who have never been paid their Super, nor (in some cases) their final year's salary each. An average $100k for about 5 pilots is in question; & just under $1m for a long time employee that many of know, who settled for less than half of what they (& the Bank of Nauru) owed him.
Four Nauran pilots are flying for JAL, Emirates, & Eva, but not invited to fly for the national carrier as ON's technical (mis)management team have their mates (all captains) in there.
The airline never had any funds to commandeer. The Nauruan land-owners have paid for the airline operation.
Taiwan paid for their current aircraft, as it has our own (Marshall Is) Dash8. Some $1.5m has been given to CW since Christmas & they still can't get it right. So Nauru is not alone in that regard.
You can not blame any politicians in Nauru about the airline's lack of financial performance. Poor management has been a factor over the past decade & it may not improve for quite a while.
Some serious consideration to revenue generation must be high on the new CEO's agenda if ON is going to remain viable.

KM,

I think Ivan's perspective was that of current management and not that of old.

Certainly there is little scope to deny that the historic management of Air Nauru left a lot to be desired, but you cannot for a moment exclude the negative effects that constant government meddling had on their already marginal (negative) bottom line. The airline was directed to operate non-viable routes to serve the interests of some of the then politicians, charters requested by, and operated for, the government were never paid for. There is also the occasion, for example, when the then president directed the airline operate to Melbourne one Christmas so that the president could get his Christmas hams - and you can guess who had to wear the cost of that. Don't forget the wonderful chairmanship of one individual whose previous claim to fame was to see the Nauruan shipping line disappear under his chairmanship. Further it wasn't the airline's fault that the Bank Of Nauru had its funds dwindle (a lot of Nauruans, too, are still owed by the bank not just expatriates) nor that the Super fund (government controlled) wasn't able to honour its committments to any superannuants. My point is, there was interference by the government in any number of ways - undeniably - and this would adversely affect ANY management, good or bad.

Now, to compare that previous management and former set of circumstances to today and Our Airline is invalid. The airline of today seems to be making a go of it unlike their near neighbours of Kiribati, the Marshall's and even good old Solomon Airlines here in Honiara. All have received Taiwanese money over the years but only one place seems to be delivering as evidenced by the recent Norfolk announcement which will certainly assist the coffers significantly. The outfit of today, and the government resolve to see it work, is nothing like times of yore.

Separately there has been a bit of talk here that Our Airline is about to get its first national Captain, contrary to your statement. This snippet was all but confirmed when speaking to the flight attendants on a recent Our Airline flight I caught back to Brisbane. If true, this is to be applauded.

Talking about taking a deep breath consider this -
There is an economic tidal wave coming and some of these operations will not be coming up for air.
Have you looked at VBs market cap today.
Stoddart knows this and got out in the nick of time.

The only viable airlines in the pacific , remain as always. Air Pac and Air Van.

Air Pac practically owned by QF to protect routes(financed by QF), and Air Van owned by the government,(but run by expats).

Our Airline is the same old joke with a different paint job.

Sal-e,

Passionate response, but I'm afraid you're a bit off the mark:

sharp and heavy handed criticism
A few home truths is not criticism, merely stating facts - which you happen to agree with in the third paragraph of your post.

what you were remunerated for by Nauru.
How so, my income is derived in Australia from an industry unrelated to airlines?

Sal-E, you are at risk of discrediting yourself by letting your fervour get in the way of facts. I've made a few enquiries through a recently made connection and have gleaned the following:-

There were no pilot salary increases subsequent to Our Airline re-emerging following the collapse of Air Nauru. The salaries, I'm told, aren't adjusted for annual CPI increases unlike those in DJ, QF etc. and remain as they were 3 or even 4 years ago.

My informant confirms that you are absolutely correct about the the halving of the Flight Attendants salaries however that was for flying only 50% of what they could have - a decision taken locally by the flight attendants themselves in order to share the work around. Their working in cleaning, traffic, baggage etc when they are not flying is also verified, but you don't tell the entire story. I am informed that, when they do do these other duties, they get paid additionally for them and thus have the ability and opportunity to build up their salaries to what they were before for ultimately the same amount of, albeit different, work. I am further informed that pilots, too, are doing extra duties on non-flying days - they are involved in relevant projects essential to the company's ongoing well-being, emergency procedural training etc etc.

Allowances have been slashed, that is confirmed, but across the board, pilots included.

So, Sal-E, put your case by all means, but preferably not in a selective manner so that those reading this thread aren't mislead.
