Sydney Displaced Threshold And Noise Curfew
I heard a rumour this week that Airservices Australia was considering the introduction of a displaced landing threshold on Runway 16R/34L at Sydney for night time operations. I understand that they are talking about an approximately 1 mile [5000 feet] displacement, leaving around 8000 feet of usable runway for landings.
Apparently they intend to mount a case that the newer generations of small jet aircraft are a lot less noisy than those operating when the curfews were established many years ago, and that a one mile displacement would reduce the noise footprint over affected areas by at least 3dB [on top of the reductions brought abought by Chapter 3 compliance] - this would allow the curfew to be 'shifted' - that is, the curfew would be adjusted to allow regular domestic [read Qantas/Jetstar/Virgin]operations through the night, for those aircraft that are suitably equipped, and for pilots who are suitably trained.
Apparently the intent is not to set up a secondary ILS glidepath like Frankfurt RWY 26 - instead the operations would use FMS/RNAV approach and landing, with a dispaced touch down coordinate in the system. I understand some additional lighting would be required.
Can anyone confirm this? Is it feasable?

GLS
I don't know whether it is feasible but it would be a great opportunity to showcase the versatility of the GLS/GBAS system that is installed at YSSY.
Who knows, curfew hours precision approach access might even alter the business case for installation of GLS avionics in airframes that are not currently equipped.
