Emirates recruiting

Hey all!

I have just seen advert on afap from Emirates.
It seems that there will be many australian pilots that will be leaving the majors over here to go fly for Emirates. Their terms and conditions are much better than what we get offered in Australia. They will be tripling their fleet size!!!!!

In today's industry I think the average career for an Aussie pilot will go something like this:
-chtr/intructor pilot - 1-2 yrs
-regional pilot (can probably skip this in today's industry) - 1 yr
-airline pilot for a major airline (jetstar or virgin) - 2 yrs
-Emirates pilot - earning good coin
*from what i here around the traps is that Qantas could also be one of the majors that are used as a stepping stone.

A colleague told me that Cathay is also starting to feel the pinch of the pilot shortage and are getting worried.

My advise is not to sell your self short and to stick together boys and girls, so that we can get rightly rewarded for our skills!!! I know tradies that make alot more than a pilot will in a year. Why??? Well it is because there is a shortage of tradies.

Good times for all.

All this talk about big money overseas, perhaps if you are a ten year veteran!

I have looked at their website and don't think the pay/lifestyle equation is that good, but hey that's just me!

EK is not the be all end all for some though, while the coin may be better than the local majors here, lifestyle does come into play.....

You are right with salary though, the locals will need to sort things out!

Note slight change to the requirements as well. Previously you could apply if within 500 hours of the minimums. Now it's within one year i.e. if you're racking up the hours at max rate you can apply 900-1000 hours below requirements.

Must still have them minimums on joining though.

I've been with ek 9+ years. The nett money is better than I would get as an 9 year FO with QF.
The problem is that you have to live in Dubai and that really isn't that desirable once the thin veneer is removed and the reality exposed.

Unhappy

629bus could you try that again in English?

From the Emirates website...
First Officer base is Dhs 20,840 a month so Dhs 250,080pa they specify an exchange rate of 3.66 Dhs to the US dollar...so that becomes USD$68,327 which then becomes AUD$78,131.
Then they add 35Dhs an hour flying pay. Say 800 hours pa = AUD$8720
PLUS AUD$1,563 exchange rate protection salary per month = AUD$18756
Which adds up to AUD$105,607.
They provide accomodation and transport to and from work.
Not really BIG BUCKS is it? Virgin base is $96K.
The BIG difference is the income tax.

ernestkgann, does that sound about right?

I would have thought that when they start to struggle for crew they could offer overseas basings. That would change things a bit. Tax becomes an issue of course.

Fo's in EK are now paid almost the same as FO's in VB after the fall in the USD. That makes the decision easy!

Not quite right. I would say you probably do more like 600 hours (after vacations, training rosters etc, for which you are not receiving flying pay).

This would leave you at $6500 AUD.

Coal-

Couple of other things to adjust/think about when comparing EK with Virgin though-

Medical - paid for for yourself and family
Utilities- Electricity, water, Gas- paid for
6 weeks leave a year (1 free Annual Live ticket for you and the family)(
Unlimited ID 90 travel for you and your family

Petrol in Dubai- about 40 cents a litre

(not to mention a route structure that leaves Virgin for dead)

What about the traffic in Dubai?

If it's not the worst in the world then it's pretty close.

Icarus I would say that you are about right. The hours for an FO as Yada said are probably a touch high and I get half of the exchange rate protection you mentioned where it is maxed out at Dh2 500 (Oz760/month).
As Flash said you don't have to pay for accom/utilities which is a saving if you own a home somewhere and someone else is contributing toward your final ownership. Otherwise, if you spend it all at the Mall of the Emirates then it means nothing to you.

Lets not forget that when you are employed as an expat you are there by invitation.
That is if you fall foul you have no real avenue for appeal as we know it.Even if you are completely in the right, Cross one of the locals and you are cactus.
If you want to sell your soul and tread the thin blue or whatever colour line then good luck to you.
Personally I would rather be paid less and live in the Luck country.
Better the devil you know.
Yes I know some have done very well but I also know those who have had professional integrity and been shafted.
Plan for the worst and hope for the best.....with that in mind and you still decide to go you should do allright.

Well, we've had 8 QF pilots start at EK in the last 6 months, not to mention several VB guys (including Captains coming as FOs), so just what is so funny?

Been at EK for 10+ years and driving left seat on the bus. Pay is $AUD17,000 per month net less accommodation and PFund. I pay about $3,000 for my accommodation as its my own place, plus about $2,000 towards my PFund contribution. That leaves me about $12,000 to live on, pay the gas and elec and save. Education, medical & dental is paid for by EK. That equates to about $140,000 net per year, plus annual profit share of roughly $12,000 and overtime (there if you want it!). For me to earn this amount in Oz, I would have to be earning close to $220,000 gross a year.
Looked at other options but will stay in the sand pit for now. Good luck with those of you thinking of a career overseas.

Yeah what maybe $200 per month

Utilities- Electricity, water, Gas- paid for

um maybe again $200 per month

6 weeks leave a year (1 free Annual Live ticket for you and the family)

So what

Unlimited ID 90 travel for you and your family

Again so what

Petrol in Dubai- about 40 cents a litre

Where the hell are you going to drive to

For me to earn this amount in Oz, I would have to be earning close to $220,000 gross a year.

QF are certainly on this and VB I believe will be on par or close soon with Jetstar to follow maybe.

The friggin desert versus OZ. Yeah whatever

You need a roof over your head and to make provision for retirement in Australia too, so the 17k is basically net income. That's 204k net per year. What would you have to earn in Aus to net that? 300 plus?

captain dog,

Ever been here? 27 degrees today, sunny as always.Swim at the pool then nice BBQ with some mates and a few cold ones. And this is winter! The place has it's problems, but it certainly has its compensations. Seen more of the world in the last 18 mths than the previous 30 years.

Aus is a great country, but the world doesn't end at Darwin, and the idea that you HAVE to live there regardless is whats keeping Aussie pay and conditions in the crapper.

Glad you're happy, but so am I.

Wiz glad you are so happy. But the Simpson Desert also has lovely 25 degree winter days and the coast. Well ...........................

You could not pay me enough to live in the pit with me Muslim Mates. Maybe for a million bucks I would think about it.

I would have to be earning close to $220,000 gross a year. Is what fatigueflyer posted which can easily be made in oz. Even in Jetstar from what I hear!!!
