Solomon Blue?

Off another thread:

PACIFIC Blue has emerged as the latest airline willing to fly to the Solomon Islands, applying to start Boeing 737 services to the Pacific island later this year.

The Virgin Blue offshoot yesterday lodged an application with the International Air Services Commission for 540 seats a week on the route and said it would be fully utilised by November next year. It asked for a five-year allocation.

"The proposed services will initially be operated twice a week by a wet-leased B737-300 aircraft fitted with 138 economy seats," the airline said in its application.

"With market growth and fleet changes, the services will be upgraded to Pacific Blue B737-800 aircraft with 180 seats."

Thought they were interested in Air Van.!?

Could the wet-lease aircraft come from Airwork? Don't they have one of Ansett's old B737-300's?

Why wouldn't they just use one of their own -700s? 132 vs 144 seats isn't much, plus crew commonality, better fuel burn etc etc.

Crew commonality isn't a consideration when wet-leasing an aircraft.

Pac Blue don't operate any -700's, only Virgin Blue. At the moment, VB crew's don't operate any international flights except the very occasional military charter.

Yes I'm aware PB don't currently operate -700s but it surely wouldnt be too hard to transfer a couple... -700s make far more sense for domestic NZ too... Anyway...

You would think so, a lot of people were suprised when the -800 was anounced as the launch aircraft for NZ domestic.

I think it comes down to the extremely small fleet size, i.e. the aircraft have to be compatable for both the domestic and international operation, and it would be too hard to mix and match such a small fleet.

It had to be said. Sad, but true.

Wouldn't think so, hasn't got that many seats (138) and, from what I'm told by one who works there, crews are flying to the limits with all the ADF work. No scope for more work unless they employ a few more Captains, and I haven't seen any ads. They employed a couple of F/O's a while back but that was just to balance the Capt-F/O ratio and stop having to crew flights with 2 Captains - didn't allow for any expansion though.
