Skywest announces Kalgoorlie to Melbourne service
Skywest Airlines announced today that it will shortly commence direct flights from Kalgoorlie to Melbourne.
The much anticipated service will commence 21 November 2007, and will operate three times a week. The flights will be direct and operate to Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport.
Skywest Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Paul Daff, said the Kalgoorlie to Melbourne service was an exciting new chapter for the Western Australian based airline.
“Kalgoorlie has not had a direct air service link to Melbourne, and we believe that the Skywest service will be eagerly utilised by a number of mining and corporate organisations based in both Kalgoorlie and Melbourne.”
“It also will facilitate convenient access to Melbourne for Kalgoorlie residents; and help stimulate tourism into Kalgoorlie from the east coast,” Mr Daff said.
The service will operate three times a week, by 100-seater Fokker 100 jet air aircraft.
“As with all of Skywest’s Fokker services, the Kalgoorlie to Melbourne service will offer a premium economy class product of hot meals, in-flight bar, Dome café quality coffee and the most spacious economy legroom of any Australian airline,” Mr Daff said.
Whilst the service is not set to commence until November, Skywest has already opened bookings to the public. For bookings made prior to September 9, 2007 (for travel at any time), Skywest is offering a special fare of just $250 one way or $498 return. Bookings can be made via the website at skywest.com.au, calling 1300 66 00 88 or visiting a travel agent.

I wish them every success.
It's great to see some innovation from an airline for developing a new route that others have not tried. It could be pointed out that this would never have happened without the mining resource boom in WA, but at the end of the day good luck to Skywest!

I hope its a winner for them!

Why not leave the gloating until you've been operating the route for more than 6 months and broken 50% load factors XR, like the other routes in WA that have'nt been handed to you on a silver platter by the labour government, there, happy.
With 3 flights a week, no on-carriage ( not everybody leaving KG wants to go to ML ), and no FF scheme, I give it 6 months. Very smart move not doing it in winter though, get the punters used to direct before you start diverting for fuel.
And yeh, still waiting for the 320s you were " definitely " getting.

oh cunning how so predictable you are! i also remember you saying how they would only last 6 months on per-bme when they started some 3+ years ago...funny how your predictions turn out to be so often so wrong you sad thing...

What some of you may not know is that the KG Shire have offered a 3 year 'contract'. In that contract the KG Shire will not charge the airline any landing fees, and will give the airline $1,000,000 a year!
So....even with all the break downs that will not doubt occur, and the lack of advertising, even a GA operator like XR will make money.

tjz, XR don't have their own ground crew in Perth so I'd say it's unlikely that they're going to have them in MEL. They are handled at PER by Aerocare so they are most likely to be in the frame for the ground handling at MEL.

Topend, don't remember saying that, if I did then clearly I was wrong, was'nt wrong about the 320s or PD, KA so I guess 2 outta 3 aint bad.
Maybe one day you'll get a job with a real airline and won't suffer from small man/airline syndrome
