who want's a slightly used 747-338
rumor has it Qantas are trying to sell one of it's 747-338 for only 7 million, but there seems to be no takers, the aircraft is sitting up against the fence in Sydney with no hours left on the airframe,it was due for a D check but it cannot be slotted in anywhere in the world due to the shortage of maintenance slots around the globe, and Avalon cannot do it due to lack of man power, perhaps they could start a Heavy Maintenance facility in Sydney and then call it a jet base

Talk about a fire sale !!!
If there is an aircraft that cannot fly or be serviced then the board should be made to answer for letting this situation happen.
The engines are worth more than that aren't they?

Nunc est bibendum
JAL has a very extensive fleet of Classics.
Given the world wide desperation for airframes I would have thought that it'd be worth more than $7 mill!

They never intended it to have a D check. They didn't forget about it. It was always planned to be sold when it was out of hours. If they did a D check on it and kept it flying you would be whinging about how old it is.
The value of old aircraft is determined by the hours remaining to the next "D" check and hours remaining on the engines. I believe that EBT has virtually none of these and $7 million is the spare parts value.
The Classics were kept in service to fill in until the arrival of the A380 and the subsequent 2 year delay has created this tight situation. The fourth "D" check is more expensive than the first three and it does not make sense to spend this money for just one year of service prior to the A380's arrival. The aircraft would be worth more but there is no guarantee of a buyer. If there is someone out there who wants this aircraft then I'm sure that they will find an MRO to carry out the "D" check.

How far into the countdown are we on Victor, Whiskey, X-Ray and Yankee? I understand the blue one has been grazing in AVV for a few years now... was that for the same reason? I've also noticed a distinct lack of international flying for the classics; even HNL has switched to the 763s! Are they purely trans-con machines now?
Soooo, how many of these new A330s are -200s for JQ and how many are -300s for QF and when are they due?
PS - Is the aircraft in question (EBT) likely to be placed on eBay anytime soon? Or is it to be sold to QF's ambassador at large... JT???

Rip all the weight out of her and she would make a pretty expensive toy for a private plane!
Maybe YLRE needs some more expanding, B707, B742, B743?......B744.....
The QF graveyard, but its good for the outback tourists!

You can't kill the Classic.
Like the monster in a bad Japanese Sci Fi flick, the Classic is the aircraft that WILL NOT DIE! You can cut the wings off and it will grow some stubby mutant wing thing and leap back into the air ready for 2000 more Perth returns.

Can any one confirm or deny that these old 300's are down on the balance sheet at a book valuation of AUD $35 millon each . A clever piece of creative accounting if it's true.

Apparently the refurb that was done a few years ago to put the old style business class seats (go figure) still has not completly depreciated. So the genius' decided to spend .hit load of dollars putting in old style seats with the knowledge that the aircraft would be retired before the depreciation schedule finished. 'luckily' the A380 was delayed.
