Air NZ and Emirates

Wots the story?

"there is a hireing ban at ANZ and EK is negotiating a wet lease programme with Air new Zealand to take over some of the Pacific routes, with 3 tripple sevens surplus at the moment in Seattle. this will mean EK pilots will be doing ANZ routes based out of Aukland for upto 2 years".

Its all true. It would seem that EK have far too many crew, with 1000s more applying everyday, and not enough work. So, EK is now branching into the wet lease business.

They (EK) are said to be branching out into other areas as well. It has been noted that most recent interviewees have been asked to practice the phrase "Would you like fries with that?" in English. This has been a major stumbling block for a lot of guys lately. Luckily the EK management have decided that English is not too widely spoken in NZ, so it would appear this part of the testing will be removed.

Hope this clears up the situation.

Don

Seems odd considering that AirNZ was looking at wetleasing a 744 or 2 to Air India to run Mumbai - Paris - New York, not sure on what's happened to that. AirNZ has some extra tech crew, can't see why they would bring in outsiders when they could dry lease an aircraft themselves and crew it, but you never know what's around the corner.

Maybe EK is giving AirNZ a very good deal just to get the business. Might tie into the rumour that EK basically poisition their a/c to Akl from Oz cos the parking rates are cheaper and hence why they can offer some very good airfares trans-tasman
Anyways, knows really how things work at the top

From what I hear, the Air India deal fell through, and Air NZ are renewing calls for pilots to take un-paid leave, with possibilities of down training and furloughing (aparently they are able to furlough pilots for up to four years?). Anyone in the know care to comment?

All in all, not looking great for those after a job with ANZ.

The wet lease deal that has been mentioned would make a lot of sense. After all, EK are one of NZs main competitors on the cut-throat Tasman routes, so it would make sense to get into bed with them. Not sure about the rest of the pacific though?

Air NZ have a problem with pilot distribution...too many Captains and F/Os on the widebodies, and not enough S/Os. Brought about by the reduced size of the 767 fleet and the raising of the retirement age to 65 (and possible mis-management of pilot resources by the company...surely not!)
There is talk of down-training, which is allowed for in the pilot's contract, but not redundancies. Apparently numbers are ok, but the way they are distributed is the problem.
I believe they will be encouraging pilots to take leave without pay and looking at secondment options amongst other things. Perhaps the secondment of pilots (and aircraft?) to Emirates is not beyond possibility, as EK seem to be a bit short of capacity given the late delivery of the A380. ANA is another possibility, as well as one of the Indian carriers.
But even if a whole bunch of guys take LWOP, and others get seconded, that doesn't increase the S/O numbers.
Time will tell, but I don't think you will see EK flying Air NZ services any time soon!!

EK is to buy ANZ

Actually the real rumour is that EK is going to buy Air New Zealand. That will give them unrestricted rights into and out of Australia, plus all the Pacific routes they want.

Since Sheikh A (Chairman of Emirates) is a huge investor and property owner in NZ, he is eligible for citizenship. This means the 50% NZ ownership clause is satisfied. In fact, under the Trans-Tasman agreement, he can also buy Qantas if he feels like it.

Thumbs up Good on Air NZ

Actually, I think that if Air NZ offers to release pilots rather than down train them that is good for the pilots, at least they have the choice. If that then means they have to hire in new S/O's that is even better for pilots. I say good on Air NZ.

cockroach

Cheers for clearing that up. Doesn't sound quite as dire as I first thought. Really just a continuation of what's already been happening. I guess we can still expect a bit of hiring in a couple of years if not earlier. There's plenty of opportunities for guys with 767 type ratings in the likes of Japan, and I would think unpaid leave while maintaining seniority would give some of the more adventurous pilots a good chance to explore.

I see ICAO is now making noises about a retirement age of 70 But who the heck wants to drive until they're that old? I would have thought that most retirements were by choice anyway, so how much real affect will the 65 limit have?

As of last year Emirates were leaking Pilots almost as fast as they could hire them. And they had several 777-300 ER's idle in the US at Boeing with no crew. So how the hell are they going to do ANZ flying?
Must have had a big turnaround??????????
I don't think so

ACMS- Absolute rubbish. No doubt Pilots have left in the past year, but nowhere even close to the numbers hired.

The rest of your post is true, and with the expansion rate EK is undertaking, it is hard to imagine that they could take on the NZ flights.

according to a 777 Captain mate in Emirates they lost a hell of a lot of Pilots in 2006, something like 60 to 70, one hell of a lot.

THATS WHY EK GAVE EM A 18% PAY RISE.

Devil

ACMS wish it was true But wrong on 2 accounts
No pay rise until pay packet end of May
Pay Rise ONLY 6 % on basic salary

sorry guys bit off topic but this needs to be nipped in the bud again....
Company are pitching a 18% Rise based on being paid 35 AED an hr Flight Pay FO and 45 AED Hr Capt up to when productivity pay cuts in around 78 Hrs. When you are on leave or doing Sim or sick or do not do at least 78 hrs then it will be less than this , wish full thinking 18 % Lots of guys have pulled the pin over the past year safe to say numbers never before heard of in the history of the airline, what ever the closely guarded figures are

Don has it all sussed in the post above, nice one Don
