Qantas eyes Asian airline

January 23, 2007 - 3:39PM

Qantas says it is close to making a substantial investment in an unspecified Asian carrier.
"We are very close to announcing a substantial investment in the region," Qantas chief financial officer Peter Gregg said at an aviation conference in Singapore today.
"We are in talks with a carrier and there will be an announcement in the next few weeks.
"We don't intend to license our brand, we intend to take ownership," he added, without naming the target carrier.
Gregg said Qantas would not take a majority stake in the carrier because of regional laws, and said the deal would be completed by the first half of 2007.
"It's not a majority stake due to ownership restrictions.
"It's going to be an investment in the two-digit millions of US dollars."

Should we assume that this lot has learned it's lessons from the Jetstar Asia fiasco and doesn't repeat the mistakes?

Unhappy

The usual story - another record profit in the pipeline, so expect money to be stuffed into any hollow log/investment opportunity going... Surely they wouldn't follow through with the talk of a few years ago that they were going to invest in AdamAir though in light of recent events...? Then again, nothing should surprise me any more...

More likely it's Air Asia. Expanding fast and with Porn* International about to operate to KL it would feed the services very well.

Darth wants to become the Murdoch or Packer of the airlines....pure and simple.

If this aquisition also patches up the disaster called Jetstar asia then he has hit the quinella.

Can you imagine the conversation bewteen Darth and the takeover partners.."Honestly guys J* asia was going to be huge but a few governments got in the way...if we buy wokair everything will be great...trust me.."

Today's Herald Sun reports that it was indeed Adam Air .
Negotiations have been ceased with Q.F stating that the recent crash had nothing to do with it --yeah right!

Perhaps Tiger...
They seem to be able to get roots Jet star Asia can't.
Join those 2 together and pull all the roots it wants.

Routes/Roots ....pull/pool

Bolty, as SQ own Tiger, I doubt that they would give QF any more access to Asian air routes. Yesterdays Fin Review mentioned that QF has been talking to Air Asia. They seem to be the most established of the Asian LCCs with a very good route structure so my money's on QF buying a stake with them.

Through my own even more dodgy rumour network of friends, I believe it is Air Asia, a LCC based out of tke LCC Terminal at KUL.

This seems to fit as a feeder off the coming JQ services into KUL, reopening an abandoned QF route but with in house feeders to Malaysian leisure destinations and a heap more of Asia as well. They operate A320 equipment.

Booked 2 seats on them to Padang today and I can tell you they use the standard skylights program used by JQ and DJ and just about every other rock-ape shuttle on the planet.

Time will of course tell, but it sounds plausible at least.

Best all

At "an investment in the two-digit millions of US dollars" it won't be AirAsia out of Malasia. It could be AirAsia out of Thailand as it is much smaller and running at a substancial loss the last time I looked.

Yeah it's Pacific Airlines in Vietnam. Reading between the lines of the newspaper article, QF are after it because Jetstar Asia cannot get any routes in Asia and things are not going well there at all. If they buy this mob out then they get access to domestic routes in Vietnam plus several international Asian destinations that Jetstar can then access.

Peter Greg admits that Jetstar Asia is marooned in Singapore as there is zero domestic travel and they cannot get routes to go anywhere. Not to mention real competition from Tiger.

Again reading the article it looks suspiciously like Plan B for Jetstar Asia as Plan A could only be described as a bit of a disaster.

Meanwhile Geoff Dixon keeps on telling what a awesome manager he is, while pumping QF dollars into this failed venture.

Not sure if 25% is buying out any airline for that is the maximum they will be allowed to buy and will not be allowed a controlling interest. I suspect though it will be used as an airline alliance for J* international and J* Asia will be folded. This too will be a failure as JD still hasn’t figured out how business is done here in Asia. They will gladly take his money and run while he is still holding the baby. Watch this space.
