Dumb and Dumber

Of course this media report has not given the FULL story but on the face of it I see some interesting issues for discussion here.
I guess he could have just worn the T-Shirt I saw in NY yesterday - A photo of George Bush Senior and George Jnr, side by side, with the caption "Dumb and Dumber" beneath......
Qantas is refusing to let an Australian man board a plane from Melbourne to the United Kingdom because he insists on wearing a T-shirt depicting US President George Bush as a terrorist.
Alan Jasson, 55, says he wants to wear the T-shirt, but Qantas says written or verbal comments that could cause offence or threaten security will not be tolerated.
Mr Jasson says he is being denied his right to express his political views.
"I have a right to my political views and no one can take them away from me," he said.

ABC News Online 12.39pm AEDT 22Jan 2007
Mr Jasson says the ban on his T-shirt is outrageous.
"People who have a political view, you know if I say John Howard's a liar, John Howard knew that there were no children overboard, if that's a view at some point you have to say bad luck," he said.

(Edited for spelling - It's late over here! )

These things should be decided democratically, not arbitrarily by the gate staff/duty manager/whoever.

They should ask any passenger likely to be offended by the tee shirt to press their call button. If more than half the call buttons are pressed, the SLF doesn't board. Sounds quite fair to me.

What would they do if he'd rocked up wearing a "Vote for Hilary" tee shirt. Or even "Vote for Obama". They'd probably let him on, because it's a positive message. Unless the gate staff don't know the difference between Obama and Osama.

Worse still, suppose he wore an Australia Day tee shirt, and they let him on, then he changed into the anti-Bush tee-shirt in the bathroom overhead Uluru en-route to the UK, would they chuck him out?

For Pete's sake...

VH Cheer-Up, for once I have sympathy with Qantas over their innappropriate tee shirt ban.

For a start I suspect that the inside of an aircraft is not a "public place" within the meaning of any act, so the "free speech argument is not valid.

I believe wearing such attire is closer akin to shouting "fire" in a crowded theatre. All that it takes is one Bush supporter to fixate on the Tee shirt and a few drinks later....Same would go for "Islam Rulez", "Howard Sux" and so on.

I also believe you are asking for trouble arriving in any country with a political slogan on your chest, the British and American immigration people seem to have been taking lessons from East German border guards lately. You are asking for a good question session or to be sent back.

Perhaps something more tasteful like:

"Subvert the Dominant Paradigm" or

"Frutex est pessimus Praesieo Umquam" (Bush is the worst president ever) or

"Frutex est maximus concutio umquam" (bush is the biggest terrorist ever)

would be more appropriate.

Happy New year

I wonder what would happen if you walked through a Qantas terminal with the word "Sunfish" written on your tee shirt???

And whats wrong with Sunfish might I ask? Used to see em just about every day at work - white, extremely portly and up to fifty feet under water.

Re the T shirt. Thought it way over the top - the reaction that is. Really is getting to be a police state. My view may be influenced perhaps by the fact that I somewhat agree with statement re Bush.

With the Australian Flag now a symbol for gang violence, will the RAAF fleet no longer be allowed into Asic super security airports?

Yeah, I'd better remove that Aussie flag sticker on my luggage just in case it sparks race-riots at the check-in desk.

As a PIC, I would not have hesitated to refuse the guy carriage. His idiotic anti-authority attitude has no place on any passenger aeroplane.

Yup, the final decision rests with me in accordance with CAR's! Sorry buster. Either it's off, or YOU are.

No question about it

The "terrs" have won. Absolutly, hands down, won. They have been abley aided and abetted by the wowsers, and the folks who have completly and utterly lost contact of their native sense of humour, fun and, dare I say it, a basic hard earned right to FREEDOM OF SPEECH. The terrs can and do exactly as they like (and wear what they like) while we wait patiently at the check in until the 75 th woman passenger today has removed her bra. True (Hobart, Oct 2006), sorry ladies the machine is playing up today was the best they came up with.

Whats next fer cryin' out loud. even the bloody skipper wants to throw him off so politically correct is he. Three words for him, glass, house and stones.

Boys and girls, it's only a "T - shirt", whats next, my glitter boxer shorts offend the vicars wife in row 26 so off I go. Restore all forms of humour and sense of fun and freedom, you can do it - honest.

Bollix and shame on you, fight back against this mindless invasion of the basic right our grandparents gave us.

Settle down!

The staff were simply following orders.

I'm surprised no-one else got the directive.

Dixon Directive #327
No passenger may act in any way as to upset Mr Howard while I'm trying to Macquarie my airline.

Question for Captain Freckle

" Yup, the final decision rests with me in accordance with CAR's! Sorry buster. Either it's off, or YOU are."

My Dad is just interested, specifically which CAR/CAO company ops manual gives the Captain the authority to refuse travel, to a pax who simply express' an individual point of view, which apparently is contrary to his/her own?

Not being adversarial just interested.

SF You really got to stop hangin out with Kath and Kim down at Fountain Gate. Their humour is addling your brain, or is it the coffee they serve? With you as PIC there would be a be a riot on board. Saw the same shirt in Switzland last month and no one gave a hoot. Mind you George is not exactly flavour of the month in Europe.

So what does the rest of the T-Shirt read.
I fail to see how you can link "Dumb and Dumber" to terrorism.
There has to be more than what has been quoted here.

As for banning the display of the Australian flag by Australians at an Australia day event then clearly it is time to fight back.
First of all I hope no Australian attends that event, let the promoters who are instituting the ban go broke.

Second of all.....no forget that. I'm sure it wouldn't get past the PC moderators here.

Diplomacy will not win this war, only eradication will.

Is it possible Mr Freckle could move to another seat/forum? I find people who are anti-anti-authority offensive.
