JetStar Employing Thai Cabin Crew

Reported on etravelblackboard today.
Jetstar keeps costs down with Thai cabin crew

Tuesday, 7 November 2006

Jetstar has always tried to maintain its low fare for its customers by keeping its operational costs low. In keeping with this philosophy, Jetstar has announced its plans to open a new cabin crew base in Bangkok.

About 100 Thai flight attendants will be joining the Australian crew in manning the Jetstar International flights, and because they will be paid the cheaper local rates, it will be saving dollars for travellers.

Despite the fact that their wages will be lower than their Australian counterparts, the Thai flight attendants will be payed well. Jetstar CEO Alan Joyce said that the cabin crew salaries were very good in Thailand.

“We’ve had over 1000 applicants for 100 jobs we have up there, so it’s been very good in terms of recruitment for us,” commented Joyce.

The planned first Jetstar International flight is Melbourne to Bangkok on November 23 of this year.

...And in due course the Jetstar aircraft will be maintained by Thai engineers in Thailand and flown by Thai pilots who will perhaps overnight occasionally in Australia.

It's a really good business model isn't it? Masquerade as an Australian airline, trade on the Qantas reputation for safety and service that was built by generations of Australians, but minimise the number of Australians employed in favor of using cheap third world labor wherever possible.

Meanwhile, tell the Government it must restrict access to Australian aviation markets in the interests of keeping Australians in jobs.

Some may call it brilliant, I just call it fraud.

Sunfish - you are of course 100% correct - yet I have had people argue to me on these Forums that the current Government is helping me keep my job

Lets not leave out the "Japanese Nationals" they are currently recruiting (see Jet* website) to be based in Australia. What we have no Australian citizens or residents that can speak Japanese anymore?

It really is a very clever move when you think about it ,that is if you are on the board.

With the employment of Thai cabin crew there will be pressure on Australian J* crew to accept lower conditions and pay next time their EBA is due.QF L/H found this as soon as the overseas bases started the company was pressuring us to make concessions.

More flying will be given to the Thai crew when they have the numbers in BKK and as for only having 100 just wait for a year or so.

The race to the bottom has just changed up another gear.

I know it has been said before but I wish the company would base it's board in BKK and employ locals as board members.Imagine the savings to the travellers then....

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. How long has Qantas mainline employed Thai nationals based in Bangkok? Let's not mention the New Zealand and United Kingdom based crew that have also been wearing the QF uniform for years and years and years...............

Easier to overlook that than give up on J* bagging though, isn't it?

2daddies,

You know very well who the Jet* bagging is aimed at, it's not the cabin/tech crew.

Re the BKK base...I thought JET* where revolutionary and seperate to QF in every way ?? Yet.. we see them following their 'daddy' to Thailand for recruitment and even painting 'Qantas group airline' on the forward fuselage on the second hand A330.

AJ is still just a puppet on a string.

The one in the Jetstar uniform and on the Star Class ads? If you mean this woman she is Aussie but of Chinese descent. She has worked for Jetstar for a couple of years now.

Well the Pilots, with their thin wallets, will at least have a smile on their face when those small hands get a grip on them and create an illusion of massive growth.
Should keep em quiet for longer.

2daddies,
If you had read my post you would have realised that I was bagging the principle of off shore crew not J* per se.

Having said that ,it is fair to say that it is J* crew who by accepting their EBa's that have given the company all the ammunition they need ...Thanks guys
