I make no direct reference to this particular tragedy as there is still a long way to go with verifying the facts.

QNH refers to the selfishness of suicide and in fact it is the ultimate selfish act. Many would have experienced first hand the trauma associated with it with the loss of family or friends, most often male. It may not be so justified though to judge these people from a rational perspective. Severe depression is a dibilitating illness which weeds out rational thinking and replaces it with an increasingly narrowing perspective and outlook over time.

It's this state of mind which effectively masks the indicators to those interacting and/or working with the individual. Anyone associated with loss through suicide agonises over their perceived failure to see the 'signs' and maybe to have been able to prevent the death...to do something or to do more. The tunnel vision of the suicider allows them to focus more and more keenly and efficiently on what they see as their only option and increasingly insulates them from the terrible impact of their actions on family and even strangers. They end up presenting a persona that is focussed and even calm and often appear quite opposite to someone considering doing themself in.

If this accident is indeed a suicide, then that makes two pilots that I know of who have ended their lives in recent weeks. Talking now and again with your close mates about issues a little deeper than footy or cars might give them a chance to open up about their worries. Just talking alone helps. if you are concerned about a friend or family member, or yourself, www.beyondblue.org.au is a really useful source of info.

Body of plane crash pilot to undergo post-mortem
The body of a pilot killed in a light plane crash yesterday on Flinders Island, in Bass Strait, has been flown to Hobart for a post-mortem examination.

Local man Peter Waterhouse died after his four-seater Beech Bonanza crashed into Mount Killiecrankie shortly after take-off.

He was the only person on board.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

An inquest will open tomorrow.
