Qantas CB - PH engine failure

had a relative on the flight from CB to Perth last night. A/C (737-800) had an engine failure and subsequent diversion to sydney. All the fire'ies surrounded the aircraft once landing at sydney. Just wondering did anyone hear the real cause for the problem. Pax were told (as expected) a precautionary engine shutdown. Family member said there was a massive bang just before taking off.

Is the difference between the two is that precautionary engine shutdown is when the engine shutdown because the stats of the engine are overeading like EPR etc? Whereas shutdown is completed after an engine failure also...

The story as I understand it was:

Birdstrike on takeoff out of CB with subsequnet engine vibration, thrust reduced but no IFSD. Flt diverted to SY due to LDG weight back into CB but still an overweight LDG in SY.

Flt then ops SY-ML (change of A/C in SY) to pick up new crew due hours limitation then onto PH

Lightning does strike twice!

Last night 737-400 operating CB-ML had a birdstrike on T/O to #2 engine, subsequnet mild vibes and cooked chook smell in the cabin. Flt continued to ML due normal parameters from affected engine aside from vibes.

Considerable fan blade damage observed on arrival!

Birdstrikes in Canberra

From memory Virgin have had one recently (maybe a few months ), you have got to wonder how many more birds are left down there.

I understand there are hundreds of birdstrikes a year, but CB seems to have a plague problem.

Probably too many polies out feeding the chooks!

The stop in MEL was to pick up new tech crew. Upon landing in SYD new TC could not be called in before curfew. The poor cabin crew operated the whole way with the customers. The customers took it all rather well by all accounts.

I worked with the cabin crew PER-SYD yesterday. They said it was an experience to say the least. They started their day in SYD so did SYD-CBR-SYD-MEL-PER... Throw in the semi cabin prep into SYD and it makes for a long enough duty I reckon.

I wonder if there has been an increase in the rate of birdstrikes since the Brindabella Business Park and it's water features were built?

I thought those engines were able to handle a few birdies. Must have been pretty big

If it was a precautionary shutdown why then the Mayday call? (which one fo the ATC guys on that night told me about) I would have thought a Pan would have been more appropriate. Is this a standard thing with Q now? Ask as curious thats all.

Devil

Sorry Sleuth, but I was on duty at the time, and involved in proceedings. PAN call is confirmed; there was no mayday.

Apologies in hijacking the thread, but just wondering if there are any other details of one of the Qantas ML-NZAA flights on 24/9. Apparently it got half way there when pilot declared engine problems and returning to ML. On the way back problem apparently worsened and diverted to SY instead. Can anyone confirm what the problem was here?

Also the DRW -DPS 737-400 that returned to Darwin with an engine shut down a few days ago. One that only had a relatively few hours on it since overhaul.

They did an engine change in a hangar there. Had to fly one up to Darwin.

Anyone know if these engines are being overhauled in a certain asian country?

At the rate they are going there won't be many spares left.
